James Gunn originally titled the film 'Superman: Legacy'

Gunn originally titled the film 'Superman: Legacy' when he finished the first draft of the script. However, by the time he finalized the screenplay, he decided to go with the straightforward title 'Superman'. The movie is slated to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.

The news comes on a fitting day - February 29, a.k.a. Leap Day - which also happens to be Superman's birthday, as revealed in a 1966 comic. Gunn shared a photo from the set showing a close-up of the new Superman logo, providing the first sneak peek at the suit actor David Corenswet will wear as the Man of Steel.

"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday," Gunn wrote on Instagram and added, "Making our way to you July 2025."

'Superman' marks a fresh start for DC Universe under James Gunn's leadership

'Superman' marks a fresh start for the DC Universe under Gunn's new leadership. The decision to recast Superman with Corenswet, a relative newcomer, rather than bring back fan favorite Henry Cavill in the role, initially outraged some fans.

However, Gunn defended the move as necessary to portray a younger Superman in his story. At 29, Corenswet matches the age of Clark Kent when he first becomes Superman in the comics. Meanwhile, the 39-year-old Cavill no longer fits the part after playing Superman in multiple films over the past decade.

In addition to Corenswet in the titular role, 'Superman' stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. The cast also includes Anthony Carrigan, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, and Terrance Rosemore.

'Superman' serves as the first chapter in Gunn's ambitious new era of DC storytelling across both film and television. The director outlined an eight-to-ten-year plan for interconnected movies, shows, and animated projects centered around DC icons.
