‘Too stupid even for him’: Trump's niece mocks his letter tying Greenland demand to Nobel Prize
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Mary Trump, the niece of President Donald Trump, on Sunday, January 19, reacted sharply to the letter her uncle sent to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.
In the letter, Trump linked the United States’ bid to acquire Greenland with him not getting the Nobel Peace Prize.
Mary dubs Trump's move 'stupid'
Mary, the daughter of Trump's late older brother Fred, publicly expressed disbelief and criticism in response to the reported contents of the letter.
His words prompted Mary to call the move “too stupid even for him.”

Her reaction quickly gained attention online, coming, as it did, from a family member who has previously been a critic of the president.
Notably, in an earlier post, Mary called on European leaders to take a firmer stance about Trump's threat to impose tariffs on countries that resisted efforts to take control of Greenland.
She was referencing a New York Times headline that read, “European Officials Lean Towards Negotiations, Not Retaliation, Over Trump Threat”.
Mary wrote she was "tired" of the failed strategy of negotiations and appeasement and asked leaders to "Fight back!"
Mary’s past criticism of Donald Trump
A clinical psychologist and author, Mary has portrayed Trump as emotionally stunted, sociopathic, and unfit for leadership.
She claims his "narcissist" personality stems from dysfunctional family dynamics that are detailed in her 2020 book Too Much and Never Enough.
Speaking about Trump during a panel at the Hay Festival in May 2025, she had said, “[Donald] is the only person I’ve ever met who’s never evolved, which is dangerous by the way.”
She further cautioned audiences, adding, “Never choose as your leader somebody who’s incapable of evolving — that should be one of the lessons we’ve learned, for sure.”
In a November 2025 interview with The Daily Beast, Mary also said she believed Trump was showing signs of cognitive decline, drawing parallels to changes she had observed in her grandfather Fred Trump Sr before his death.
Describing her concerns, she told the outlet, “There are times I look at him and I see my grandfather. I see that same look of confusion."
"I see that he does not always seem to be oriented to time and place. His short-term memory seems to be deteriorating,” she had mentioned back then.
Donald Trump's controversial letter to Norway PM
The letter, reportedly addressed to Store, connected the United States’ interest in “acquiring” Greenland with Trump’s frustration over not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
In the letter, Trump wrote, “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”
He went on to argue that his contributions to NATO entitled the US to reciprocal action.
“I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”
Trump's message was in response to a text message Store sent on behalf of himself and President of Finland Alexander Stubb urging Trump to "de-escalate" on "Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine and your tariff announcement."
Store wrote, "You know our position on these issues. But we believe we all should work to take this down and de-escalate - so much is happening around us where we need to stand together, We are proposing a call with you later today-give us a hint of what you prefer!"
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump has said acquiring the territory is essential to US national security and to "protect" it from Russia and China.
