Top Democrats Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries endorse Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden in November
WASHINGTON, DC: Two of the most influential Democrats in Congress have declared their support for vice president Kamala Harris to replace President Joe Biden in November.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also a Democrat from the same state, discussed the growing rumors that they would support Harris at a press conference held on Tuesday, July 23, at the Senate Democrats' campaign headquarters.

"Now that the process has played out from the grassroots bottom up, we are here today to throw our support behind Vice President Kamala Harris," Schumer said, according to Fox News.
President Joe Biden made the stunning announcement that he would not run for president again on Sunday afternoon, July 21. The stunning move came amid mounting Democratic concerns about his physical and mental state of being as well as his ability to launch a campaign and serve a fourth four-year term. The 81-year-old leader instead endorsed Harris who is 22 years younger than him.
Other prominent Democrats extend support to Kamala Harris
More than 150 House Democrats have endorsed Harris as of Tuesday afternoon, July 23. Several Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and former president Bill Clinton, swiftly followed suit.
In a statement, Pelosi said that she endorses her fellow Californian with "immense pride and limitless optimism for our country's future," adding that her "enthusiastic support ... is official, personal and political."
"Officially, I have seen Kamala Harris's strength and courage as a champion for working families, notably fighting for a woman's right to choose. Personally, I have known Kamala Harris for decades as rooted in strong values, faith and a commitment to public service," she said, according to Axios. "Politically, make no mistake: Kamala Harris as a woman in politics is brilliantly astute – and I have full confidence that she will lead us to victory in November," Pelosi added.
Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, have also endorsed Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden as the party’s presidential candidate.
“We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” the Clintons said in a statement posted on X. “Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her,” the statement added.

Left-wing lawmakers are certain Kamala Harris will win 2024 election
However, left-wing lawmakers, who spoke with Fox News on Monday, July 22, maintained that anyone who wished to compete in the primary could still do so, even though they were confident Harris would still win.
"You’re seeing Democrats coalesce around Vice President Harris. I have endorsed her. Ultimately, in order to have a primary, you have to have a challenger. No one is challenging her," said Representative Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla. "And so, right now it is an open process, right? You've seen potential people come out who could run and they're endorsing her. And so that is the open process that's happening," he added.
When asked if he would advise potential challengers to stay out, he said, "I'm not discouraging anything but these people, right, folks at a high level, governors, senators…they're not saying they're gonna throw their hat in the ring, they're endorsing Vice President Harris because they also think she's the best person for the job. So it's tough to say ‘We want to process,’ when right now you don't even have a challenger."
Harris now has the support of enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination at the party's August naming convention. Fox News was informed earlier this month by a source with knowledge of the talks that Schumer and Jeffries urged the DNC to postpone officially designating Biden as the nominee.
Internet mocks Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries for backing Kamala Harris
Netizens took multiple jabs at the two prominent Democratic leaders for endorsing Kamala Harris as the next presidential nominee for their party. One X user tweeted, "When you have to goad the press to applause (they didn’t) you have a problem!" Another wrote, "They’re caving in because they know they’ve lost."
"Because they both are waiting in line to get serviced," one remarked while someone else wrote, "Didn't they want someone else, or was it all about making kamala president. First female Indian Jamaican president, or was it Indian American."
"I love how it's being written like they have a choice can you imagine the backlash if they didn't? Don't feel sorry for them in the slightest, they've made their bed..now lie in it," said one.
