WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden and the  Democratic National Committee raised $85 million in May for the incumbent's re-election bid but fell short of his challenger Donald Trump's fundraising haul for the month.

Though the octogenarian's fundraising for last month was the second best since the election year kickstarted, he failed to surpass the Republican presumptive nominee's massive $141 million, boosted by the latter's conviction in the New York hush money trial.

Biden and his allied groups now have $212 million cash on hand, an increase from the $192 million it had when April fundraising closed, according to CNBC.

Biden campaign touts May fundraising as a sign of 'growing enthusiasm'

According to the Democrat's campaign team, last month's donations mostly came from grassroots donors.

"Our strong and consistent fundraising program grew by millions of people in May, a clear sign of strong and growing enthusiasm for the President and Vice President every single month," said Julie Chavez Rodriguez,  Biden's campaign manager, in a statement.

"The money we continue to raise matters, and it's helping the campaign build out an operation that invests in reaching and winning the voters who will decide this election."

Biden's campaign hired its 1000th staffer on Thursday, June 20, indicating that the donations are designed to implement a massive ground game throughout the US. At the same time, Trump's team slowed down staffing in battleground states.

It should be noted that the massive donations to the former president's campaign stemmed from his guilty verdict in the hush money trial, amassing a $53 million in 24 hours after the conviction at the end of last month.

In addition, MAGA Inc secured $50 million from conservative megadonor Timothy Mellon on the day after the conviction, as per FEC filings.

In light of this, Biden campaign officials emphasized that the president conducted no major fundraising events in May.

The Trump campaign is yet to report the total cash on hand at the end of May, which they are not legally required to do until July.

Internet derides Trump despite Biden's May fundraising falling behind

Netizens, however, taunted Trump, although Biden managed to secure fewer donations last month. Many pointed out that the former president would be using the amount to pay his legal expenses and debt.

A user took a swipe at Trump, saying, "But they won't be spending it on lawyers," referring to Biden's fundraising.

"Trump best grift.... running for president.." another quipped.

A third user noted, "All the money in the world doesn’t make him not a convicted felon." Meanwhile, a fourth response read, "Biden isn’t gonna be using his donations to pay his legal bills though."

Another person wrote, "Donald Trump is getting all of this money from his wealthy friends but it’s not being used for his campaign and down ballot candidates— it’s being used to pay his legal bills, Mar-A-Lago, Trump Tower — again he’s all about himself."

"There is no proof DT raised the amount of money he claimed he did," someone else chimed in.

An individual wrote, "Biden’s June’s numbers should be really good too. Trump may have a higher amount again, but he burns his money out on lawyers. Overall, Biden spends more on getting ground game, tv/online ads, and ultimately VOTES."

Another user remarked, "The reason for Trump getting more is because of the conviction BUT Biden raised 85 million without any big fundraising events and Trump isn't even going to be using that money for anything useful anyway."
