Trump touts Arctic deal with NATO
During his departure from the Davos summit in Switzerland on Wednesday, January 21, the President claimed that he and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte have established a framework for a future deal centered on the Arctic region.
When CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked if the US would now own Greenland, Trump didn't say yes or no, but he made it clear that the agreement is meant to last forever.
When asked again if the deal fulfilled his previous desire to acquire the territory, Trump still only stated that it is “a long-term deal.”
He further elaborated on the scale of the agreement, noting that “It’s the ultimate long-term deal. And I think it puts everybody in a very good position.”

'Infinite' Greenland agreement to boost national security
Trump later described the intended duration of this framework as “infinite,” asserting that the agreement meets his specific requirements for controlling the region.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his optimism by stating that the solution, "if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations."
Furthermore, the Republican leader also signaled that the scope of the negotiations remains broad.
He noted that additional talks are currently underway concerning "The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland," referring to his proposed missile defense system, though specific technical details of this integration have not yet been made public.
Scheduled tariffs suspended after Davos summit
This diplomatic shift has resulted in the immediate suspension of economic pressure, as Trump announced he will not impose the tariffs, he said, "based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st."
To finalize the details of this Arctic strategy, Trump has appointed a high-level team consisting of Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Following the confirmation that the United States would not pursue the territory by force, global markets stabilized, even as Trump maintained that "It’s called negotiation."
