JOINT BASE ANDREWS, MARYLAND: President Donald Trump, on Friday, June 19, took a swipe at the press while showing off his new presidential aircraft, joking that reporters seemed unusually cheerful once they were offered a chance to step aboard what he described as one of the most luxurious planes ever built.

The light-hearted exchange came as Trump praised the massive jet, defended his decision to use it and argued that America should project strength and prestige on the world stage.

Trump turns plane tour into media roast

Speaking before a crowd at Joint Base Andrews, Trump spent several minutes marveling at the aircraft, which was provided by Qatar and has become a focal point of political debate in Washington.

He described the jet as being in a class of its own and suggested that few aircraft could match its scale or luxury. According to Trump, the administration sought the plane after facing delays with the existing presidential fleet.

He argued that the United States should not hesitate to use top-tier equipment simply because of political optics.

“This is considered the world’s most luxurious plane when it was built,” Trump said. “It was built at a level that will probably never be seen again.”

The president then surprised reporters by offering them a tour of the aircraft after the event. That announcement prompted one of the more memorable moments of the speech, as Trump looked toward the media section and joked that journalists suddenly appeared far happier than usual.

“Oh, look at them! They are actually smiling,” Trump said while pointing toward reporters. “Are you smiling? First time I’ve seen them smile in years!” he added, drawing laughter from the audience.

Trump continued the riff by claiming journalists rarely showed the same enthusiasm toward Republicans.

Trump's new aircraft draws attention

The plane itself has generated significant controversy since reports emerged that Qatar made it available for presidential use.

Supporters argue the aircraft provides a modern alternative to the aging presidential fleet, while critics have questioned the optics and long-term arrangements surrounding its use.

Trump brushed aside those concerns during his remarks, insisting that the United States should be represented by equipment that reflects its global status.

“A normal president wouldn’t do this,” he said, suggesting other leaders might avoid such decisions for fear of criticism.

The president also pointed to the size of the aircraft, noting that existing infrastructure had been designed to accommodate larger planes and arguing that the jet better fits America’s needs.
