LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Late-night television host Stephen Colbert recently took aim at Newsmax anchor Greg Kelly for his interview with former President Donald Trump, calling out the exchange for its eerie resemblance to state-run propaganda.

On Thursday's episode of 'The Late Show', Colbert didn't hold back in his criticism of the interview, likening it to something out of a totalitarian regime with its "real 'Dear Leader' vibes." He specifically honed in on one particular question Kelly posed to Trump, which left Colbert utterly stunned.

Does Donald Trump see legal troubles as divine protection?

The question revolved around the multiple criminal investigations looming over Trump, who has now secured the Republican nomination for the 2024 election despite facing four indictments.

Kelly, seemingly undeterred by the gravity of the situation, asked Trump if he ever considered that these legal challenges were actually serving to protect him, possibly even by divine intervention.

"Trump clinched the Republican nomination this week and last night he went on Newsmax to talk to Greg Kelly. Now, if you don't know who Greg Kelly is, it doesn't matter. Trump spent a lot of the interview talking about how unfairly he's treated," said Colbert.

Stephen Colbert calls out the absurdity

“These cases were made to destroy you, and they’ve helped you and some of us […] we see that you’re protected maybe even by the hand of God. Has that ever crossed your mind?” Kelly asked Trump during the interview.

Colbert, visibly taken aback by the question's audacity, pointed out the absurdity of the suggestion that these investigations, meant to hold a public figure accountable for potential wrongdoing, were somehow shielding him.

Not stopping there, Colbert also seized upon a verbal tic he observed in Trump's recent rhetoric, noting the former president's penchant for prefacing statements with "A thing called."

This linguistic quirk, according to Colbert, only served to underscore the surreal nature of the interview and Trump's ongoing public appearances.

Additionally, Colbert challenged Trump's assertion that everyone, regardless of political affiliation, aspires to be his vice president. He mockingly labeled Trump a "coward" for failing to act on this boastful claim, daring him to actually follow through on his words and select a Democrat or liberal as his running mate.

Diverse opinions on Donald Trump's treatment and potential VP selection

The public reaction to Donald Trump's recent interview and his ongoing political saga reflects a spectrum of opinions and emotions.

One user wrote, "Proof that is treated unfairly is that he isn't behind bars. VERY unfair."

Another added, "There's only one thing I want to hear about Trump, and that's a thing called GONE!"

One user commented, "Trump is being treated the way he deserves. He has actually been treated better than he should be."

One user wrote, "Trump's chance to win the general election hinges on picking the right VP. There's only one valid choice - former Olympian and the only person to win the Nobel prize for Vice-Presidenting - George Santos."

Another replied, "Serious....if he gets back in he will stand and swear on oath to protect the constitution! WHAT A JOKE AND A INSULT!"
