NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Comedian Whoopi Goldberg triggered an online outrage by insisting she has to "work for a living" while co-hosting the Tuesday, November 12 episode of 'The View'.

The 69-year-old made the remark during a segment on the election victory of the GOP nominee Donald Trump, where she compared herself to working-class Americans facing hardships in the current economy.

However, it may have been a stretch for the EGOT winner, whose approximate net worth is $60 million, according to Newsweek. The celebrated Hollywood actress reportedly received a salary of $5 to $6 million dollars in 2016 for hosting the morning talk show on ABC. Her current salary is unknown but is expected to be greater.

Whoopi Goldberg's comments on 'The View'

While discussing the outcome of the general election that took place on November 5, 'The View' co-host Sara Haines claimed that she understood why some work-class people voted for Donald Trump over the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.

"There were millions and millions of people who felt heard (by Trump), and that's what I'm trying to walk into," she said, but Goldberg was far from convinced.

“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me too. I work for a living,” stated Goldberg. "If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here, OK? So, I'm a working person, you know?"

"My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family. I know it's hard out there," she continued, but insisted that it was not worth having the MAGA candidate in charge as it put many people "in danger."

Internet calls Whoopi Goldberg 'tone deaf'

Netizens reacting to Goldberg's statement trolled her over the social media platform X. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"She’s got to be one of the most tone-deaf celebrities I’ve ever seen. I truly don’t know how anyone genuinely watches this lady except to mock her," wrote a user.

"This is the whole problem with the Democrat elitist party. They think they are down with the struggle while being worth millions of dollars," shared another.

"All these overpaid actors are completely out of touch with reality," jibed someone else.

"She’s lost all credibility if she ever had any. Just go back to being a comedian and an actor and quit trying to tell people about things you don’t even know about," stated one user.

"If she’s working class, I’m starving class," quipped a user.

"When was the last time she actually went to a grocery store?" inquired yet another.
