Angelina Jolie reveals why she’s forced to stay in LA while hinting at major change once her twins turn 18
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Angelina Jolie is navigating her life in Los Angeles but she does not intend to live here for long.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie opened up about her current situation, explaining that she was in LA because of her ongoing divorce proceedings with Brad Pitt.
Angelina Jolie opens up about living in LA due to divorce battle
Angelina Jolie, who grew up in LA, shed light on her plans for the future once her youngest children, twins Vivienne and Knox, turn 18.
Jolie, 49, explained that her presence in Los Angeles is largely because of her divorce from Pitt. "I have to be here from a divorce," she said, referring to the custody and legal battles that have kept her in the city.
Despite her connection to LA, where she was raised by her parents, actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, Jolie expressed a desire to move out once her twins reach adulthood. "But as soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave," she noted.
Looking ahead, Jolie plans to "spend a lot of time in Cambodia," from where she adopted her eldest son, Maddox, in 2002. She also intends to travel to visit her family members around the world, emphasizing her wish for privacy and peace for her six children, including Maddox, Pax, Zahara, and Shiloh.
"When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety," Jolie said.
"I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be...... that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here."
Jolie has been candid about the challenges of raising a big family in a city that doesn’t always reflect the global humanity she cherishes.
Jolie and Pitt’s divorce battle, which began nearly eight years ago, still continues with ongoing disputes over custody and finances, as well as a separate lawsuit concerning their French winery, Chateau Miraval.
Sources close to the situation describe the prolonged legal battle as "pretty shocking," highlighting the couple’s differing approaches to parenting and life in general.
"A major reason for their unhappiness before Angelina filed for divorce was their frequent clashes over parenting their kids," the source shared. The insider also noted that the former couple "always had different approaches to life just in general," particularly since Pitt didn't grow up in Hollywood, while Jolie did.
Angelina Jolie reveals intense despair following divorce from Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie has recently opened up about the profound emotional impact of her divorce from Brad Pitt, revealing how this tumultuous period has shaped her portrayal of Maria Callas in the upcoming film 'Maria'. Jolie, who has described the divorce as a time of "despair" and "pain," found a deep personal connection with the legendary opera singer, particularly in their shared experiences of vulnerability and abandonment.
During the Venice Film Festival, where Jolie promoted Maria, she reflected on her evolving relationship with music, noting how her early love for punk, particularly bands like 'The Clash', gradually shifted toward classical music and opera.
Jolie explained that the intensity of opera resonates with the depth of emotions she has experienced. "When you have felt a certain level of despair, of pain, of love, at a certain point there are only certain sounds that can match that feeling," she said.
"The immensity of the feeling encapsulated in the sounds of opera—there is nothing like it."
Jolie’s connection to opera, particularly through her portrayal of Callas, is deeply personal.
The role required her to sing, a daunting task she undertook with seven months of training. Despite her nerves, especially with her sons present during her first attempt, Jolie embraced the challenge. The filmmakers blended Jolie’s voice with Callas’, creating a powerful fusion that honors the late singer’s legacy. Reflecting on the experience, Jolie expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and praised director Pablo Larrain for his patience, helping her grow into the role.
Callas, widely regarded as one of the greatest opera voices, died at 53 after a period of ill health and isolation. Jolie expressed a deep empathy for the opera star, hoping that Callas knew how loved she was despite the hardships she faced.
