INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: Caitlin Clark disclosed why she chose to "like" Taylor Swift's Instagram post endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 White House race.

A reporter asked the Indiana Fever player before the match against the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday, September 11, why she liked the pop icon's post-debate endorsement of the Democratic presidential nominee, as per the New York Post.

The 22-year-old basketball player attributed it to her "amazing platform" but did not declare her formal support for Harris as Swift did.

Shortly after the fierce debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump on September 10, the 'Shake It Off' singer broke her silence and announced she would vote for the vice president in November through an Instagram post.

The pop icon said that the VP "fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them."

Caitlin Clark cites encouraging people to register to vote for liking Taylor Swift's post

"I think for myself, I have my amazing platform, so I think the biggest thing will be just encourage people to register to vote," Clark replied to the reporter.

"It’s the second time I can vote in a [presidential] election; at 22, I could vote when I was 18. I can do that, that’s the biggest thing I can do with the platform that I have. And that’s the same thing Taylor did. And I think continue to educate yourself with the candidates that we have, the policies that they’re supporting," she added.

The basketball player emphasized her reasoning and urged everyone to make use of the platform and vote in November.

Though Clark did not reveal whether her support was for Trump or Harris, the New York Liberty player Breanna Stewart declared during the Paris Olympics that she, along with some other WNBA players, would do whatever possible to "back" the Democratic presidential nominee's White House bid against the 45th president's.

"The things she stands for, we also stand for," Stewart told USA Today at the time. "So we're making sure that we can stay united and continue to push the message of registering to vote, knowing where to vote and all the resources behind it."

Swift, who broke her silence on the presidential race, said a false AI image of her endorsing Trump made her disclose her plans as a voter in the upcoming election. Furthermore, she also advised the first-time voters to register, adding voting early was much easier.

She signed off with the infamous "Childless Cat Lady" label in a swipe at Trump's running mate, JD Vance, who in 2021 made disparaging comments about childless Democratic women leaders, including Harris.

Internet divided over Caitlin Clark's reason behind her decision to 'like' Taylor Swift's post

In response to Caitlin Clark's explanation of why she liked Taylor Swift's post endorsing Harris, netizens held a divided opinion. While one group slammed her, another supported the basketball player's response that encouraged people to vote.

"She could have used her platform to tell fans to back off of her teammate. Would’ve done wonders for team chemistry, and she still could’ve spread this message," one user said.

Another added, "Said like a seasoned pro. CC is way ahead on the effective communication game."

"Actually it's not the same thing that Swift did. Quite different when one promotes registration/voting and the other endorses a specific candidate," read a third response.

A fourth user wrote," 100% correct, like Caitlin says, educate yourself on the policies of each presidential candidate and get out and vote."

"Caitlin’s answer was diplomatic but a BIG FAT LIE. She “liked” Swifty’s post because Swifty endorsed Kamala. She would not have done it without having the money. Michael Jordan had wisdom when saying, “Republicans buy sneakers too”. The “like” cost her a portion of her fan base," someone else opined.

On the other hand, an individual remarked, "Perfect response. She is not endorsing either candidate but encourages everyone to go out and vote."

"She’s voting for the orange guy! And she’s like Jordan who used to say republicans and democrats but shoes," another user chimed in.

While one remark read, "Such an incredible response from a class-personified athlete. Honest. No partisanship. Encourages every person to participate in the electoral process. Doesn't put one-side over the other. The Hawkeye state must be proud of their favorite daughter. The Hoosier state is now lucky."
