CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA: Political commentator Candace Owens condemned Ryan Reynolds for what she perceived as a joke about his wife Blake Lively's ongoing legal dispute with Justin Baldoni during the 'Saturday Night Live' 50th anniversary special. Reynolds and Lively attended the event on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

On February 17, Owens shared the moment from the 'SNL50' on X, expressing her disapproval of Reynolds' apparent reference to the legal conflict between Baldoni and Lively.

Candace Owens criticizes Ryan Reynolds' joke at 'SNL50' special

Candace Owens expressed her disapproval of Ryan Reynolds' joke saying, "Everyone: it is not okay that you used Hollywood actors to ruthlessly bully and humiliate someone under the guise of Deadpool jokes. Ryan Reynolds: okay but what if I showed up in a room filled Hollywood actors and made one more joke."

Owens' remarks were in response to a viral moment from Sunday's 'SNL50', where Ryan Reynolds appeared to reference his wife Blake Lively's legal dispute with her 'It Ends With Us' co-star, Justin Baldoni.

During the special, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler posed an indirect question to Reynolds. Fey and Poehler turned the spotlight on the couple, they jokingly asked, "Ryan! How’s it going?" Reynolds responded, "Great, why? What have you heard?"

The legal dispute between Baldoni and Lively began in December of the previous year after Lively filed a complaint accusing her co-star of sexual harassment and waging a campaign to damage her reputation.

In response, Baldoni filed two lawsuits: one against The New York Times and another against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, claiming defamation and libel. The two sides are scheduled to appear in court on March 9, 2026.

Internet agrees with Candace Owens' view on Ryan Reynolds' joke

Candance Owens' critique of Ryan Reynolds' joke gained support online, with users calling out Hollywood's use of humor to conceal toxic behavior. Many critics likened Reynolds' actions to an attempt to maintain popularity at the expense of others.

A user said, "Hollywood loves using 'humor' as a shield for their toxic behavior. If you're going to bully, own it, don’t hide behind scripted jokes."

Another added, "This feels like celebs coming together to give it one last shot lol."

A third commentator remarked, "They live in a bubble. I'm sure everyone around them thought it was great idea. Let's ask Tom Hanks."

"Ryan Reynolds doubling down like it’s a post-credits scene we didn’t ask for," said a critic.

A person said, "It’s like in high school when the popular “cool kids” are super into themselves thinks they’re cool and funny. But really…"

Another added, "Reynolds thinks he’s Deadpool in real life, but take away the scriptwriters and all you’ve got is a guy desperately trying to be funny at the cool kids’ table."
