Chloe Fineman reveals Elon Musk made her 'burst into tears' when he hosted 'Saturday Night Live'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Chloe Fineman officially unmasked Elon Musk as the "mystery" 'Saturday Night Live' (SNL) host who once made her burst into tears.
The Tesla CEO’s episode in May 2021, already controversial for his polarizing reputation, seems to have had quite an impact on Fineman.
Chloe Fineman reveals story behind infamous episode
Rumors about a particularly challenging 'SNL' guest host had circulated since cast member Bowen Yang hinted at his "worst experience" during a show, though he stopped short of naming names.
Recently, Fineman chose to break the silence, pointing to Musk after he publicly criticized Dana Carvey’s impression of him on a post-election episode of SNL.
In a TikTok video, Fineman commented, "OK, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butthurt over SNL and his impression," as per Daily Mail.
She added, "And I'm like, you know what? I'm gonna come out and say at long last that I'm the cast member that he made cry. And he's the host that made someone cry."
The episode, which Musk hosted, apparently took an emotional toll on Fineman after Musk expressed disapproval of her writing.
Recounting the incident, Fineman revealed, "You made I, Chloe Fineman bust into tears because I stayed up late writing a sketch, I was so excited, I came in, I asked if you had any questions, and you stared at me like you were firing me from Tesla and were like, it's not funny."
The sketch in question, 'The Ooli Show,' involved Musk playing a producer interrupting an Icelandic talk show, but according to Fineman, the CEO scrutinized every line.
Chloe Fineman deleted the video after it was up for a few hours. Luckily I saved it…in it she says Elon Musk did not like her sketch: “You made I, Chloe Fineman burst into tears because I stayed up late writing a sketch. "He started pawing through my script – like flipping each page, [and] being, like, 'I didn't laugh once, not one time.'"
Despite the tense experience, Fineman later acknowledged that Musk performed well in the skit.
Reflecting on the finished product, she said, "The sketch made it on, and it was fine, and I actually had a really good time and I thought you were really funny in it. But, you know. Have a little manners here, sir!"
Elon Musk slams Dana Carvey’s 'out of touch with reality' impression of him
Elon Musk's recent ire was aimed at Dana Carvey's impersonation of him, which aired shortly after Donald Trump's election victory.
The tech mogul was unamused by 'SNL's take on his public persona and tweeted his frustrations, saying, "SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality." He claimed the show’s attempts to "prop up Kamala [Harris]" only served to damage her campaign further.
During the sketch, Carvey, dressed in Musk’s characteristic all-black outfit, took on Musk’s quirks, saying, "Check it out - dark MAGA - but seriously, I run the country now."
Carvey also joked, "America's gonna be like one of my rockets: You know, they're super cool and super fun, but there's a slight chance it could blow up and everybody dies."
Musk’s response to Carvey’s performance was dismissive: "Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey," he commented, adding that SNL seemed bitter about Trump’s win.
He even supported a user's assertion that the opening clip garnered more reach on his own social media site than on NBC’s platform.
'SNL' casts' revolt against Elon Musk hosting dates back to 2021
On May 8, 2021, 'Saturday Night Live' (SNL) welcomed billionaire Elon Musk as host, a decision that sparked considerable criticism and controversy, especially within the show’s cast, as per CNBC.
Musk’s role marked a rare appearance by a corporate mogul on the show, following business figures like Donald Trump (before his presidency) and Steve Forbes.
The announcement on Twitter met with immediate backlash from fans and cast members, who voiced concerns over Musk’s controversial reputation.
Some 'SNL' cast members responded directly on social media.
Bowen Yang reacted to Musk’s tweet, “Let’s find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is,” by posting a frowning emoji followed by the comment, “What the f**k does that even mean?" according to Page Six.
Fellow cast member Andrew Dismukes shared a tongue-in-cheek post on Instagram, referencing SNL alumna Cheri Oteri by writing, “ONLY CEO I WANT TO DO A SKETCH WITH IS Cher-E Oteri.”
Aidy Bryant subtly voiced her dissent by sharing a tweet from Senator Bernie Sanders that criticized the nation’s extreme wealth inequality: “The 50 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than some 165 million Americans,” which Sanders called “a moral obscenity.”
'SNL' writer Sudi Green shared the same post, underscoring the widespread discontent over Musk’s hosting spot.
Elon Musk's historic 2021 SNL debut drew protest
Elon Musk’s episode became highly anticipated and generated a vast viewership, in part due to his distinct self-deprecating humor and unexpected vulnerability.
In his opening monologue, Musk made history, announcing, “I'm actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger's to host SNL. Or at least the first to admit it.”
Musk also joked about Dogecoin with his mother, Maye Musk, in a lighthearted Mother’s Day cameo.
However, his Dogecoin reference had unintended effects, as the cryptocurrency’s value dropped following his appearance.
Notably, Bryant did not participate in any sketches with Musk, which some interpreted as a silent protest against the choice of host.
This absence aligned with her previous criticism of wealth inequality on social media, seemingly directed at Musk’s vast fortune and influence.
