NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Death row inmate Christa Pike has returned to prison after surviving a botched execution attempt that left her hospitalized and unconscious for nearly a week.

The 50-year-old reportedly sent a message using her prison tablet on Saturday, October 10, days after regaining consciousness and being discharged from the hospital.

“I’m at the prison. I love you so much!” Pike reportedly wrote, according to a photograph obtained by NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin. The identity of the message's recipient remains unclear.

Christa Pike will continue to receive medical care at the prison

Pike was reportedly placed on a ventilator and remained unconscious for several days after the September 30 execution attempt.

When she woke up, she was disoriented and asked, “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”

Her legal team said she was able to get up and walk soon after regaining consciousness, although she remained in a foggy mental state.

She was discharged from the hospital on Saturday and returned to the prison where she has been held for around 30 years.

“She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” her attorneys said in a statement, adding that she was receiving medical care at the prison.

Pike had been set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.

The failed procedure has since raised questions about the state's execution process and whether another attempt could take place.

Tennessee reviews failed execution as Christa Pike's future remains uncertain

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused all remaining executions scheduled for 2026 while the state reviews what happened during Pike's execution attempt.

Her medical condition could influence whether the state attempts to carry out the sentence again, Dr Joe Zivot, a medical adviser on her case, told The Sun.

Zivot said that if Pike “returns to her normal neurologic self,” including understanding who and where she is and what she has done, she “certainly faces the prospect of another attempt at executing her.”

Pike's attorneys said the state has made “no promises” that it will not try to execute her again. They have asked Lee to commute her death sentence.

Her legal team also appeared in court on Wednesday and secured a bid to preserve evidence from the failed execution, including drugs and IV lines, as they consider possible legal action against the state.

Pike had raised concerns about lethal injection months before her scheduled execution, arguing that her small veins and a blood condition could make inserting an IV difficult.

During the procedure, she reportedly told prison staff her arm felt as though it was “about to burst open.” She also asked, “Does this happen like that?”

Her attorneys said she suffered severe arm damage after being stuck with at least seven needles during the failed attempt. Those concerns are now part of the wider questions surrounding the September 30 procedure.

Christa Pike remains on death row for 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer

Pike has spent three decades on death row for the 1995 murder of her 19-year-old classmate, Colleen Slemmer.

She lured Slemmer to a wooded area on the University of Tennessee's Agricultural campus, where she and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, attacked and tortured the teenager. Pike later killed Slemmer with a piece of asphalt.

Shipp remains in prison serving a life sentence and is expected to be eligible for parole again in 2031.

Their friend Shadolla Peterson, who reportedly acted as a lookout, pleaded guilty to being an accessory.

Pike's case is back in the spotlight following the failed execution, but her future remains uncertain. Her attorneys are seeking a commutation while preserving evidence that could support a legal challenge.
