PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Former President Donald Trump commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion with a heartfelt message to veterans on social media, as reported by The Hill.

On Thursday, June 6, Trump took to Truth Social to honor the veterans of D-Day, calling them "the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth." However, the response from the public was harsh, with many criticizing his past remarks about military service members.

In his post, Trump wrote: "Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time."

In addition to his post, Trump shared a video of himself speaking with four D-Day veterans via video call, expressing that it was an "honor listening" to them. He further added that if he wins the upcoming election in November, he would invite them to the White House in January 2025.

Trump has previously faced severe criticism for his derogatory comments about veterans. A notable incident was reported by The Atlantic in 2020, where he allegedly referred to US service members as "suckers" and "losers."

These remarks were later confirmed by John Kelly, Trump's former White House chief of staff. Additionally, earlier this year, Trump faced backlash for mocking the absence of Nikki Haley’s husband, Michael Haley, who was deployed overseas with the South Carolina National Guard, during her campaign events.

These controversies have not gone unnoticed by veteran groups, who have continuously voiced their disapproval of Trump’s attitude toward military service members.

Various veteran organizations have launched attack ads targeting Trump, including one that aired during the Super Bowl in February. In a recent ad released on Thursday, June 6, three veterans labeled Trump a "draft dodger" and questioned his suitability to serve as commander-in-chief.

In stark contrast to Trump’s tribute, President Joe Biden was in Normandy, France, commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day alongside other world leaders and lawmakers. Biden met with D-Day veterans, honoring their service and sacrifices.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Biden wrote: "The brave service members who fought on D-Day became heroes. They knew beyond any doubt that there are things worth fighting and dying for. Freedom is worth it. Democracy is worth it. America is worth it. The world is worth it. Then, now, and always."

Donald Trump's post honoring D-Day veterans sparks trolling online

Social media users were quick to troll Trump, highlighting his past derogatory remarks about veterans. One user on Facebook commented, "Same guy who didn’t want to be seen with disfigured veterans because it 'doesn’t look good' for him." Another user remarked, "Never forget his utter disdain and disrespect of our veterans. He's a weather vane in a hurricane."

Additional comments included, "This coming from 5 time deferment for imaginary bone spurs to avoid the draft is meaningless," and "Cowardly Captain Bone Spurs dodged service in Vietnam."

Others highlighted his previous comments, stating, "Definitely not his words or his true sentiment, he called them suckers & losers, that's how he really feels about them," and "This is the guy who refused to attend a war memorial in France to avoid getting his hair wet."

A user commented, "He’s such a liar. How about all the terrible things he said about John McCane and Gold Star relatives. Trump is a pig he always will be."

One user posted, "Says the conman of pretend bone spurs & the quoter of calling them 'suckers & losers' at any other time. This orange clown has no shame or memory of what he says from one day to the next."
