RFK Jr clashes with Elizabeth Warren over vaccine access, accuses her of taking $855K in pharma donations

WASHINGTON, DC: Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr exchanged heated words during a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Thursday, September 4.
The tense exchange centered on vaccine access, FDA guidance, and past promises made by the HHS secretary during his confirmation.

The hearing also saw RFK Jr point to Elizabeth Warren’s campaign contributions from pharmaceutical companies, sparking fresh controversy.
During the committee hearing, the Democrat accused RFK Jr of limiting public access to vaccines despite his earlier pledge not to do so.

She cited the FDA’s narrower guidance that approves the COVID vaccine only for those 65 and over, and for individuals aged 5 to 64 with underlying health conditions.
Warren argued the policy effectively restricted coverage. “No, no. If you don’t recommend, then the consequence of that in many states is that you can’t walk into a pharmacy and get one. It means insurance companies don’t have to cover the $200 or so cost. As Senator Dr Cassidy said, you are effectively denying people vaccines,” she said.

RFK Jr disagreed, stating, “We’re not going to recommend a product for which there’s no clinical data for that indication. Is that what I should be doing?”

RFK Jr shifted the debate by raising Elizabeth Warren’s political contributions, suggesting her criticism was influenced by pharmaceutical industry ties.
“I know you’ve taken $855,000 from pharmaceutical companies, Senator!” he said.

Warren strongly pushed back. “Did you hold up a big sign saying that you were lying when you said that? Because you are the one who said you would not take them away?” Warren responded.
Earlier in the hearing, she had also pressed RFK Jr on claims from former CDC Director Susan Monarez, who alleged the HHS secretary urged her to support vaccine guidance against her own scientific judgment — an accusation he denied.
