Gwyneth Paltrow mocks critics over rumored dinner with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Gwyneth Paltrow is poking fun at critics after a rumored invitation to a private dinner honoring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked online backlash. Journalist Matthew Belloni reported in his 'Puck' newsletter that Paltrow would host an “off-the-record” dinner for Altman at her Hamptons home.
The reported invitation quickly spread across social media, with critics questioning Paltrow's involvement in the event. Rather than directly address the speculation, Paltrow responded by sharing a series of parody invitations featuring fictional characters and a playful caption.

Belloni wrote that invitations were going out for a “‘private, off-the-record al fresco dinner at her home in honor of Sam Altman,’” while sharing a graphic that appeared to be a formal invitation from Paltrow.
The image was reshared across social media, with commenters on X, formerly Twitter, calling Paltrow “a villain” and “tone-deaf.” Comedian-activist Matt Bernstein also posted a video suggesting that her affiliations with artificial intelligence amount to “technofascism.”
Paltrow addressed the controversy on Thursday, August 20, by sharing her own versions of the invitation on Instagram Stories and her grid. In the five replicas, the “private, off-the-record al fresco dinner” was in honor of “M3GAN,” “Samantha Jones,” “SHREK,” “Jessica Rabbit” and “Chanty Beluga.”
The final invitation referenced Chanty Beluga, a character created by comedian Courtney O'Donnell who has gone viral in recent weeks. Paltrow accompanied the Hamptons dinner invite memes with a mocking caption, “We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request.”
Amid the speculation, users noted that the invitation in question was “likely AI-generated.”
Gwyneth Paltrow's recent connections to AI and defense technology
Paltrow has engaged with viral internet moments before. Astronomer, the tech company whose former executives were famously caught on camera wrapped in each other's arms at a 2025 Coldplay concert, tapped the Oscar winner to film an ad.
Paltrow, whose ex-husband is Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, poked fun at the uproar as the company's “temporary spokesperson.” In June, she also made headlines for hosting billionaire military tech entrepreneur Trae Stephens on her 'Goop' podcast.
During the hour-long conversation, the two discussed Stephens' plan to build up America's military arsenal. They also covered “how new technologies are shaping our defense system” and “America's relationship with defense today,” according to the episode's official description.
Paltrow is no stranger to the world of AI and caused a stir in June after publishing an interview with Stephens, co-founder of AI weapons manufacturer Anduril.
The two discussed politics and debated whether the United States should have mandatory civil service. Paltrow also opened up about how she and her husband, Brad Falchuk, differ politically, noting that hearing opposing perspectives can be “very triggering.”
“I noticed with my own husband, too, who’s the best person ever in the world,” she said on the June 2 episode of the 'Goop' Podcast, adding, “And he’s so progressive. He has such a sweet heart, and he wants to, like, make sure everybody’s looked after.”
