MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Rep Ilhan Omar faced quite a backlash Wednesday, January 28, night after accusing President Donald Trump of suffering from “dementia".

Omar was also bashed for claiming he is “obsessed” with her after linking a recent attack against her to the President’s rhetoric.

The Somalia-born Minnesota Democrat made the remarks during a news conference in Minneapolis just one day after an incident in which a man rushed her and sprayed her with an unknown substance. Omar said she was not injured.

Omar links attack, threats to Trump rhetoric

Speaking outside a Somali mall on Wednesday, January 28, Omar appeared alongside Rep Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and local lawmakers.

The group called for federal immigration authorities to be held accountable for their actions in Minnesota, including the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good.

During the event, Omar, who represents the state’s 5th congressional district, tied the previous night’s attack to immigration enforcement and Trump’s policies.

“Last night, the man that attacked me was specifically upset that Trump's order to deport Somalis was not yielding enough deportations of Somalis. So he wanted to come get the person he thought was protecting the Somalis,” Omar said.

“Well, we are protected by the Constitution. Sorry to tell you the truth. We are protected by the Constitution.”

The congresswoman’s comments came a day after Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, allegedly rushed her and sprayed her with an unknown substance (later found to be apple cider vinegar) before being arrested.

Hours before Omar’s remarks, Trump dismissed her outright when asked about the incident.

“I don't think about her. I think she's a fraud… She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” he told journalist Rachel Scott.

Omar responded by questioning the President’s mental health and claiming he's "obsessed" with her.

“I wouldn't be where I am at today — having to pay for security, having the government to think about providing me security — if Donald Trump wasn't in office and if he wasn't so obsessed with me,” she said.

“He was on stage, moments before I was attacked, talking about me. Then when asked about my attack he said, ‘I don't think about her.’ Does he not remember? Is he suffering from dementia?”

Omar went on to argue that Trump’s rhetoric has directly contributed to an increase in threats against her.

“Every time the president of the United States has chosen to use hateful rhetoric to talk about me and the community that I represent, my death threats skyrocket,” she said.

The number of threats “plummeted” when President Joe Biden was in office, she insisted. Omar claimed she now receives “the most death threats of any member of Congress.”

Omar slammed after remarks about Trump

Omar’s comments quickly sparked backlash online.

"This is her desperate attempt to distract from the fraud investigation," one critic posted on X, referring to the ongoing federal probe into welfare fraud in Minnesota.

"No, @Ilhan he’s not suffering from dementia. He just doesn’t give a s**t about you or your act, just like nobody else does. Give back all the money you stole and get the hell out of here!" another reacted.

"It’s just her though. She doesn’t seem to understand it is the way she speaks about Americans and the US, that finds her unfavorable. It’s not Trump. Everyone can see and hear it for themselves," another user commented.

"Omar: Trump has more important things to do than think about you!!!" one comment read.

"Sorry, Honey, but you brought the attention on yourself. No boo-hooing, whining, and crying is going to change the fact that fraud is being investigated, including the allegations against you," another user chimed in.
