‘Disbar her’: Internet rages at Fani Willis as Georgia senators find ‘little control’ over DA's spending
ATLANTA, GEORGIA: The Georgia Senate Special Committee on Investigations on Friday, May 3, heard testimonies to examine the likely conflicts of interest and misuse of public funds by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who brought up the election subversion case against former president Donald Trump.
After questioning Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts and Fulton County Chief Financial Officer Sharon Whittmore, one of the senators expressed his concerns regarding the little oversight on how Willis spends her $36.6 million budget, according to Fox News.
Pitts and Whittmore testified that the DA had the power to decide what should be done with the taxpayers' dollars, including the possibility of hiring a special prosecutor and their payment.
Republican Sen Bill Cowsert, chairman of the committee, however, raised concerns over Willis' broad discretion over the funds.
"This is sounding to me kind of like the Wild West, very little control from Fulton County over a $36 million budget," the lawmaker representing Athens said after questioning the witnesses about the budget process in the county.
Testimonies indicate Fani Willis' authority over funds
"You don't know how much of that is spent on professional services, who is hired, how much they're paid per hour, what their total compensation is. Yet you're being asked to provide $36.6 million a year that you know encompasses a number of those types of independent contractors that you know you're funding with no oversight or control, right?" Cowsert asked Whittmore.
The finance chief agreed, stating that the board of commissioners had no supervision over the DA.
Pitts also echoed Whittmore, testifying Willis had the authority to spend the taxpayer funds allocated for the DA's office and was not required to seek prior approval to hire an independent special counsel to aid her.
"And [the district attorney] doesn't have to even report back to you how the money was spent or who was hired as an independent contractor and how much they were paid?" Cowsert questioned.
"That's correct," the commissioner replied.
Georgia's GOP-led Senate formed a special committee in January to investigate Willis after she admitted her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired to investigate Trump's 2020 election subversion attempt in Georgia.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee allowed her to continue in the case after Wade resigned from his post. However, the defendants, including Trump, had called for her disqualification.
Willis is standing for reelection this year and has denied any wrongdoing.
Trump faces ten counts for his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia in his favor.
Internet slams Fani Willis
Outraged at the concerns put forth by Cowsert, social media users called for Willis' disbarment.
One user wrote, "Disbarre her and throw her in jail."
Another remarked, "Fraud charges and disbarment please."
"I can’t wait until this chick is disbarred," a third user added.
An individual commented on Facebook, "Game over, make her pay it back to the taxpayers!"
Meanwhile, another wrote, "This is welfare fraud at a higher level."
"She's gonna end up like Ray Nagin, behind bars," one added referring to the imprisonment of former New Orleans Mayor.
"This is disgusting. Fire these criminals already," someone else fumed.
Another outraged user argued, "She’s a crook and everyone knows what she is. A true piece of garbage."
