Internet says 'just do it' as E Jean Carroll trial judge threatens to jail Trump attorney Alina Habba
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the defamation trial against former President Donald Trump filed by writer E Jean Carroll, threatened to send the ex-president's attorney Alina Habba to jail for interrupting the court proceedings, reported The Hill.
The heated warning occurred moments before the jury entered the courtroom on Friday, January 26, to declare the final verdict in the trial.
"You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup. Now sit down," Kaplan warned Habba during closing arguments.
The moment happened when the attorney argued with the judge to include a slide showing tweets into evidence that was not previously entered.
In yet another failure for Trump and Habba after the NewYork Attorney General Letitia James's lawsuit, the Manhattan jury ordered the former President to pay a whopping sum of $83.3 million in damages for defamatory comments made against Carroll in 2019. He insulted the Elle Magazine columnist by denying her sexual assault allegations against him.
Alina Habba's failure to respect courtroom procedures
Ever since the trial began, Habba and Trump received multiple warnings from Judge Kaplan for interrupting the procedures.
A week ago, the judge snapped at her for repeatedly asking to delay the trial so her client could attend his mother-in-law's funeral.
Her slip-ups in the court even made it into political satire talk shows. Recently, Seth Myers took a jab at Habba, pointing at the "embarrassing mistakes" she had made since the defamation trial began on January 16.
Similary, late-night comedian Stephen Colbert also questioned her competency to represent Trump in the case, mocking her past statement that she could fake being smart.
Nevertheless, following the jury verdict favoring Carroll, Habba had a fiery meltdown while speaking to the media.
After exiting the court, she stated that representing Trump was "the proudest thing" she could ever do. She also slammed the New York justice system, claiming they are after the former president because he was leading at polls.
Before the verdict was read, Trump had left the courthouse and later vowed to appeal the 'absolutely ridiculous' ruling.
