Alina Habba slammed for seeking presidential immunity to fulfill duties 'without fear of prosecution'
WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, claimed a US president should have absolute immunity to "do what they need to do for the nation without fear of prosecution."
Absolute presidential immunity was the one demand the former President put forth multiple times as he was indicted for his alleged involvement in his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The Republican frontrunner recently took to his Truth Social account demanding the same. On January 18, he wrote, "A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MUST HAVE FULL IMMUNITY, WITHOUT WHICH IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM/HER TO PROPERLY FUNCTION."
The immunity claims from Trump supporters gained momentum as he is leading the GOP primary polls with a sizeable dominance and a landslide victory in the Iowa caucus, leading to a potential presidential rematch with President Joe Biden in November.
What did Alina Habba say about absolute presidential immunity?
In a conversation with Fox News's Martha MacCallum on Friday, January 19, Habba stated that absolute presidential immunity existed before Trump took office. The attorney made the remarks while talking about the accusations against the prosecutor in Trump's election interference case in Georgia.
"I want the American public to understand that this has existed for me -every president prior since the law was created to create a shelter for presidents, sitting presidents to do what they need to do for the nation without fear of prosecution, civilly and criminally," she said.

She further claimed that the opposition to Trump's demands was only a "fear" of him winning the 2024 election and "cleaning up the mess."
"So they're bringing it, and now I have to tell you, immunity needs to stand. They don't need to create it. They need to keep it," Habba told MacCallum.
In late December 2023, special counsel Jack Smith urged the appeal court to reject the former President's immunity arguments, stating that it "threatens the democratic and constitutional foundation of our Republic."
