WASHINGTON, DC: Former US president Donald Trump posted a controversial statement on Truth Social this week declaring that he should receive "total immunity" from the federal case investigating his actions to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump shared a mysterious 32-page report allegedly verifying election fraud to justify his claims, as reported by RadarOnline.

His assertions that he was simply "taking care" of the country by challenging the election results and deserves immunity were met with widespread criticism and mockery online.

Donald Trump shares unsourced report alleging fraud in 2020 election

On Tuesday, January 2, Trump shared a report on Truth Social he claimed was "fully verified" and compiled by "the most highly qualified election experts."

While not naming an author, Trump stated the information came from "government sources, tapes, and public records."

He insisted the report showed hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes in key swing states, more than needed to change the election outcome.

Trump called on Senate Republicans to "address this atrocity" of alleged election rigging "or it will happen again."

The former president has desperately sought “total immunity” from the federal investigation overseen by special counsel Jack Smith.

In August of 2023, Smith brought four felony charges against Trump related to efforts to overturn 2020 election results after his loss to Joe Biden.

Donald Trump says election interference was his 'duty' as president

In his Truth Social post, in addition to claiming that the recent report was proof of election fraud, Trump also justified his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results as president.

He argued that exposing the supposedly rigged election was his "duty" to uphold his oath of office and protect the country.

"As President, and Commander-in-Chief, it was my duty to do so!" Trump wrote.

"If I did not do this, I would have been in violation of my Oath of Office, and the Take Care Clause," he added.

He went on to claim that because he was simply "Taking Care of our Country, and Guarding it from Rigged and Stolen Elections," he is "entitled to Total Immunity."

He also accused the Democrats of cheating at "levels never seen before" in the 2020 presidential race.

Internet heaps scorn on Trump's 'total immunity' claim

It did not take long for internet users to pile on criticism and mockery towards Trump's latest excuses.

Many focused on his lawyers' difficulties defending someone who constantly issues contradictory statements.

One commenter on X emphasized the importance of the law, stating, "We are a nation of laws. Nobody is entitled to 'total immunity.'"

Another comment highlighted the perceived predicament of Trump's legal team, stating, "Trump's attorneys have no idea how horribly boxed in they are on any defense strategy given this endless flurry of contradictory statements of fact Trump has published."

Some reactions were dismissive, with a user simply saying, "Oh please," while another remarked, "And his cult will lap this up."

One user highlighted the contradiction in Trump's claims, stating, "Still claiming that the election was rigged and stolen? There goes his lawyers' defense that he thought the election was stolen because of 'disinformation' and 'foreign influences.'"

Another commenter saw Trump's statements as self-incriminating, saying, "Trump is his own best prosecutor. This is just another exhibit for Jack Smith’s prosecution."
