WASHINGTON, DC: On Tuesday, February 20, President Joe Biden was asked by a reporter whether his three-day fundraising trip to California was a cover for lining up California's Governor Gavin Newsom to replace him atop the Democratic ticket in the upcoming November general elections.

A journalist asked Biden on the White House lawn as he was leaving, “You’re going to California. Is this about coming up with a Plan B for 2024 — does Gavin need to stand by?” to which he humorously responded, "Are you ready?” adding, “Well I’m looking for— I’m looking at you. We’re looking at you.”

California Governor Newsom, 56, has been accused of engaging in a covert strategy aimed at positioning himself for a Democratic presidential bid if President Biden is unable to continue his pursuit on health grounds, reports the New York Post.

It is also worth noting that Newsom has publicly affirmed his unwavering support for the incumbent, despite these allegations.

What else did President Biden reveal in his press conference?

When reporters tried to press Biden for further information, the 81-year-old POTUS became agitated and responded, "Hey, woah, woah, woah, woah," to cut down on the commotion.

“What I came to tell you was we’d be announcing sanctions on Russia,” Biden said, echoing a staff announcement made hours earlier. "We'll have a major package announced on Friday."

Before boarding his Marine One chopper, Biden addressed one more question concerning the election in November.

A reporter asked, “Who would you rather challenge in November; Nikki Haley or Donald Trump?”

"Oh, I don't care," Biden remarked before walking away, with video of the exchange swiftly captured and shared on X by the president's re-election campaign team.

Questions concerning Biden's health have gained center stage

Biden is the oldest-ever president to be sitting in the Oval Office, and if elected for a second term, he would be 86 years old when he leaves the White House.

There have been claims about his declining cognitive abilities in the recently published report by Special Counsel Robert Hur, which accuses Biden of mishandling classified information.

This comprehensive 388-page report compounds what previous polling has already found, that his cognitive decline could be a significant liability for his re-election campaign.

In the unlikely event of Biden's abrupt resignation from office, there could be a potential scramble for the Democratic presidential nomination between Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, and Governors Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Jared Polis of Colorado.

Ex-President Donald Trump, who lost to Biden by narrow margins in the 2020 elections, is currently leading Biden in most recent national and battleground polls.

Trump is considered the front-runner for the Republican nomination and is projected to win former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley's home-state primary by more than 25 percent, according to RealClearPolling.

Internet slams Joe Biden for dismissing reports about him stepping down

People on X ripped into the incumbent for laughing off questions about Newsom being Democrats’ last resort in case he stepped out of the presidential race due to health reasons.

One X user said, "Democrats, who constantly rage about how horrible white men are, are gaslighting everyone so hard that a struggling senile 81 year old white man is the best option to lead America for the next five years."

Another remarked, "No one needs a plan B if they were amazing . Dems - Biden is the best president ever : hey we need a plan B."

Someone else wrote, "I'd laugh it off too. That's the Dem's real problem, they don't really have a legitimate candidate."

One user claimed, "He's laughing because he knows Michelle Obama is plan B!"

Another X user quipped, "Greasy Gavin rubbing his claws together."

Finally, this user tweeted, "This means he came up with another move and it will be a surprise to everyone"
