WASHINGTON, DC: During a heated House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, June 4, Republican Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio took Attorney General Merrick Garland to task over allegations against special counsel Jack Smith, as per Mediaite.

The allegations claim Smith tampered with evidence in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. The intense exchange highlighted a deep divide over the integrity of the investigation and the conduct of federal prosecutors.

Jordan zeroed in on a May 3 filing in which Smith acknowledged that some evidence was not properly maintained by federal investigators following the August 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida estate.

Jordan accused Smith of tampering with evidence by changing the sequence of the documents seized. "Prosecutors aren’t supposed to tamper with evidence, and it looks like that’s what he did," Jordan asserted, holding up what appeared to be a printout of the court filing.

He read aloud from it, emphasizing, "There are some boxes where the order of items within the box is not the same as in the associated scans."

Garland firmly denied the characterization, stating, "I’m sorry, that’s a false characterization." Despite this, Jordan persisted, accusing Smith of mishandling evidence and questioning Garland's judgment in appointing him as special counsel for such a critical investigation.

The confrontation did not occur as an isolated incident; it is the latest episode in a series of contentious interactions between Republicans and the Department of Justice.

Garland has previously faced scrutiny over various issues, including allegations that the DOJ targeted parents speaking out at school board meetings and selectively prosecuted pro-life activists. These incidents have painted Garland as a partisan figure to some, a narrative that Jordan sought to amplify during the hearing.

Garland attempted to deflect Jordan's aggressive questioning by indicating that the matter was part of an ongoing court dispute. "This is a matter in dispute in discovery in that court, and I’m going to leave it for the district court to make a determination," Garland stated, trying to steer the conversation back to the procedural aspects of the case.

However, Jordan was relentless, dismissing Garland's responses as evasive and accusing Smith's team of bungling the investigation.

"Jack Smith’s team said that to the judge in the court. This case is now basically on hold because they screwed up so many things," Jordan declared, suggesting that the integrity of the entire investigation was compromised.
