JoJo Siwa claps back at Miley Cyrus' 'not very good' joke about her sexuality, fans say she 'overreacted'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: JoJo Siwa has responded after Miley Cyrus made a joke about her sexuality during a World Pride event.

The 22-year-old singer and former 'Dance Moms' star addressed the remark on social media, sharing how it made her feel and what she did after hearing it.

In a video message shown at World Pride in Washington, DC, on Saturday, June 7, Miley Cyrus said, “Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you,” as per the Daily Mail.

She then added, “Alright, I'm going back to get some more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out of the closet.”

In response, Siwa shared a lengthy caption and a childhood photo of herself at a Miley-themed birthday party on Instagram on Thursday.

“I was happy at my 5th birthday having a Miley themed party, and I'm still happy now at 22. If you know me, you know that Miley is my day one. I grew up beyond inspired by her from two years old,” she wrote. 

The 22-year-old continued, “I don't believe what Miley said at World Pride was ill intended, honestly I think it was meant to be a joke, but just not very good one haha. Not what the world, or myself needs to hear anyday of the week.”

Siwa also said she reached out to Cyrus directly. “I messaged Miley light heartedly about it and she replied and said ‘All love. Always,’” she revealed.

Encouraging her fans to live authentically, she added, “Honestly, the most beautiful thing I've learned in the last five years is that love is a gorgeous rainbow."

"Don't question yourself, don't second guess yourself, just love. Love, love, love, love, love," Siwa added, before concluding, “People judge no matter what, and it can be very hard, especially when it comes from someone you love and look up to.”

JoJo Siwa, who was in a relationship with Kath Ebbs before entering the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house, sparked romance with housemate Chris Hughes during the show, which she recently confirmed following her separation from Ebbs.

"I've never — I think I've always told myself, I'm a lesbian," she said on the British TV show, as per The US Sun. "I think being here — I've realized I am not a lesbian, I’m queer."

Siwa added, "And I think that's really cool, I'm switching letters! I've dropped the L and I've gone to the Q baby! That's what I love about sexuality."

This came as fans began to notice her growing closeness to Hughes.

Online reactions to JoJo Siwa’s post were divided, with many accusing her of reading too much into a light-hearted moment.

One user wrote on Instagram, “If you've already spoken to Miley in private, WHY bring this to the internet? Pathetic.”

Another chimed in, “Odd since Miley has also dated both men and women,” to which someone replied, “Yeah but Miley never claimed to be a lesbian.”

A fan added, “You can be queer and be with a man as a woman... sorry world. Actually Miley did it herself too sooooo keep on doing you! Happy pride and thanks for LOVING.”

Some backed Cyrus, saying, “Yall seriously don’t know Miley well enough to know she was joking. That’s just her sense of humor.”
