Liam Payne's dad feared for son's mental health as he was 'locked' in 'lonely hotel rooms' during 1D days
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: Liam Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, always feared that his son’s battle with mental health and the loneliness of his stardom would take a toll on the singer—and tragically, his worst nightmare became reality.
The former One Direction member died in October in a devastating accident at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leaving family, fans, and friends utterly heartbroken.
Liam Payne once recalled his dad's fears about him being 'locked' in hotel rooms
In a haunting resurfaced TikTok video, Liam Payne once echoed his father’s concerns, reflecting on the isolating nature of his career, as per OK! Magazine.
“My dad said it from day one—lonely hotel rooms. Getting locked in that room is not fun,” Payne admitted during a candid 2021 appearance on the 'Diary of a CEO' podcast.
During the same interview, Payne revealed the depths of his struggles, questioning how far his mental spiral could go.
“There is some stuff that I’ve definitely never spoken about,” he said at the time. “It was really, really, really severe. It was a problem.”
“Rock bottom? I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where's rock bottom for me? I'm very good at hiding it, you wouldn't even know. I don’t even know if I’ve hit it yet,” he confessed three years ago, unknowingly foreshadowing the heartbreak to come.
Payne fatally fell from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
His family released a statement the next day, expressing their profound grief, according to BBC.
“We are heartbroken. Payne will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time,” they said.
Liam Payne's emotional funeral brings together loved ones
Liam Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son, Bear, whom he had with his ex Cheryl Cole, his parents Geoff and Karen, and his sisters, Nicola and Ruth.
At the time of his death, Payne was in a relationship with Kate Cassidy. The couple had spent two weeks vacationing in South America before the latter returned home, just days prior to the tragedy.
She later attended Payne's funeral on November 20, joining his grieving family.
The private ceremony in Amersham, England, drew tearful tributes from Payne's former One Direction bandmates.
Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, arrived separately with dark sunglasses shielding their faces.
The service included a white horse-drawn carriage carrying Payne's coffin, adorned with floral arrangements spelling out “son” and “daddy,” reflecting his role as both a beloved family member and father.
In an eerie twist, his 2010 tweet resurfaced, amplifying the collective grief.
“If I died would you come to [my] funeral…?” he had asked over a decade ago.
They did Liam. Years too soon but they did all come #RIPLiamPayne
