MARYLAND, UNITED STATES: A 3-year-old child was fatally shot at an apartment building in Maryland, while his young mother suffered serious injuries.
The incident happened on Thursday, February 8, at approximately 5.35 pm, in the vicinity of the Bedford Station Apartments in Langley Park, Maryland, the Prince George's County Police Department confirmed.
Mother's condition is stable
At a press conference, Vernon Hale III, the assistant police chief for Prince George's County, stated that officers were called to the scene after hearing gunfire.
They discovered a mother and a boy who had both been shot when they got there.
The boy was taken to Children's National Hospital by paramedics who arrived shortly after, where they declared him dead.
The mother was brought to a hospital in Washington, DC, and now has non-life-threatening injuries. Her condition is stable.
Hale went on to say that the department is making every effort to identify the perpetrators of the crime.
"That baby did nothing to anyone. Did not deserve to die, because someone wants to come out here and play with guns," Hale remarked, as per Fox News' report.
"Bullets come down and have real consequences. I can only pray they weren't trying to kill a child. A child is dead, a mother shot! That baby won't get to be a future PG police officer or live his best life."
Reward for anyone who provides valuable information
The assistant police chief is urging members of the public to get in touch with the police immediately if they have any information about the suspected homicide.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and those around this community who had to witness this," Hale went on to say.
He further added, "Somebody in this community knows who did this. I'm asking each and every one of you to contact your friends and family. This isn't about snitching; this is about justice for victims."
The department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
