BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: A resurfaced video clip shows Democratic Representative Yvette Clarke claiming she needs more immigrants in her district for "redistricting purposes."

The viral clip, taken from a 2021 House Foreign Affairs Committee briefing, shows Clarke suggesting that the Haitian community in Brooklyn could absorb a "significant number of these migrants."

Yvett Clarke is heard saying in the clip, "When I hear my colleagues talk about, you know, the doors of the inn being closed, no room in the inn, I’m saying, you know, I need more people in my district, just for redistricting purposes and those members could clearly fit here."

New York City, which is heavily Democratic, has faced past criticism for moving to allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.

Earlier in 2025, the New York Court of Appeals blocked a law passed by the New York City Council in 2021 that would have allowed around a million non-citizens to vote in municipal elections.

Meanwhile, some have renewed calls for the legislature to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, introduced earlier this year by Rep Chip Roy.

The bill would require individuals to provide documentary proof of US citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

It also directs states to remove non-citizens from official voter rolls and imposes criminal penalties for registering an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentary proof of citizenship.

The bill has passed the House but has not yet been taken up by the Senate.

Internet slams Yvette Clarke for her statement in resurfaced clip

Several internet users slammed Rep Yvette Clarke after a resurfaced video clip showed her claiming she needs more immigrants in her district for "redistricting purposes."

One user wrote on X, "They went from saying illegals to undocumented, now they just call them immigrants," while another added, "She’s openly admitting to bringing in votes to cling to power. Did she think this wouldn’t leak, or have Democrats become this brazen? This isn’t democracy, it’s blatant voter fraud on a massive scale. Shameful."

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones also shared the clip on X, writing, "They don’t even try to hide it now…" Another user commented, "Disgusting!!! This has been their plan the whole time. They know they can't win."

One post read, "ICE needs to ramp up expedited deportations in her district," while another claimed, "She is saying the quiet part out loud."

Someone else remarked, "It sounds like Brooklyn is going to get a visit from ICE soon," and another user stated, "'Just for redistricting purposes.' She's openly saying they use migrants to win seats and won't win them otherwise."
