Pam Bondi’s former friends stunned by her rise as top law enforcer: 'She went cheap for power'
WASHINGTON, DC: Long before Pam Bondi became one of the most aggressive faces of President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, people who once knew her closely say she was a very different person-warm, insecure and largely uninterested in political power.
In interviews conducted by The Atlantic, Bondi’s former friends, confidants, and colleagues described her early years as a Florida prosecutor as defined by diligence rather than ambition.
From 'sweet prosecutor' to political hardliner
In the interview, Pam Bondi was seen as hardworking and kind, someone who loved animals, children, and had close ties to the LGBTQ community.
One former friend summed up her transformation bluntly: “She went cheap for power.”
Bondi, a Tampa native, made her name prosecuting high-profile cases and later served eight years as Florida’s attorney general.
According to people who knew her at the time, politics did not appear to be her driving force. Instead, her passion lay elsewhere- particularly in rescuing dogs and finding them permanent homes.
Friends say the shift began as Bondi became more embedded in Republican politics, taking on regular appearances on Fox News and serving as a surrogate during Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign.
As her national profile grew, so did what former allies describe as a harder, more defensive personality.
“I keep asking myself, ‘What the f**k happened to Pam?’” one former acquaintance told The Atlantic.
Even as Bondi publicly defended GOP positions, including Florida’s bans on same-sex marriage and adoption, former friends said she often framed those arguments as political obligations rather than personal beliefs.
Privately, she reportedly explained that it was simply what she “had to do” for the party.
Friends describe Pam Bondi as 'insecure'
The Atlantic piece paints Bondi as someone deeply uncomfortable refusing requests even when they conflicted with her values.
Evaluations from early supervisors described her as hardworking but intimidated by complex cases.
An ex-boyfriend told the magazine she was exceptionally caring, recalling how she once stepped in to curb his excessive partying.
According to the report, Bondi initially hesitated when Trump offered her the role of attorney general, a claim she denies.
Still, former friends suggest her eventual acceptance reflected a pattern of appeasing powerful figures rather than asserting boundaries.
A controversial tenure at the Justice Department
Since taking office, Bondi has emerged as one of Trump’s most forceful loyalists.
She has publicly attacked federal judges who ruled against the administration, fired dozens of Justice Department officials linked to Trump investigations, and installed loyalists- some without prosecutorial experience into senior US attorney roles.
At least four of those appointments have since been deemed unlawful.
Bondi has also drawn scrutiny for reversing her stance on releasing files related to Jeffrey Epstein with few even calling for her resignation on several occasions.
Now the coverup is out in the open. This is far from over.

Everyone involved will have to answer for this. Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, whole admin.
Protecting a bunch of rapists and pedophiles because they have money, power, and connections.
Bondi should resign tonight. https://t.co/7KILMsuPwv
After initially signaling openness to disclosure, she later aligned with Trump’s reluctance, angering parts of the MAGA base who had expected transparency.
