LONDON, UK: Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are now the Prince and Princess of Wales after the 2022 death of Queen Elizabeth II

However, there was a time when they were known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which was not acceptable to William, Marie Claire reported citing a Telegraph report.

The future king and the queen exchanged vows in April 2011, and at the time, William requested his grandmother to give Kate the title of "princess". But the then-monarch refused.

A courtier revealed, “He says he was born Prince William and wants to continue to be known as that. William also had views on the name Kate should have taken on.”

Queen Elizabeth II did not want to make Kate a ‘princess’

They further stated, “He wants Kate to become Princess Catherine. Kate is a commoner and could not be known as 'Princess Catherine’."

However, the insider also noted that it was "up to the Queen" to accept William's demand as there were "one or two exceptions" in the past.

“When Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester died, the Queen gave the Duchess of Gloucester the title Princess Alice. This was, though, to reward her for years of loyal service,” they mentioned.

Kate Middleton calls past few months ‘incredibly tough’

The revelation came amid Kate’s battle with cancer alongside her father-in-law King Charles. Both the royals disclosed their respective diagnosis earlier this year.

However, this month, the mother-of-three shared that she has completed her chemotherapy.

Via an online post, she spoke about the difficult time she and her family faced but also stated, “I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

“The cancer journey is complex, scary, and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything,” she noted.

Kate added, “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus.”
