INDIO, CALIFORNIA: Sabrina Carpenter addressed a moment of confusion during her Coachella 2026 headlining set, opting to respond directly rather than let the situation escalate. The 'Espresso' singer issued an apology after mistakenly identifying a fan’s cultural cheer as a yodel.
In a message shared on social media following the performance, Carpenter said her “reaction was pure confusion” and added that there was no ill intent behind it.
The incident occurred during her Friday, April 10 set, when she misidentified a fan’s Arabic 'zaghrouta,' a traditional celebratory cheer. The moment drew criticism online, with some fans pointing to the chant's cultural significance. Carpenter’s response came shortly after the performance, as she moved to clarify the misunderstanding and address concerns raised by fans.

The singer addressed the moment in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) by resharing a fan’s post that read, “Sabrina saying that she doesn’t like a cultural arabic cheer… this is so insensitive. I am very disappointed in her.”
In response, Carpenter wrote, “My apologies i didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly.” She further added, “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. could have handled it better! now i know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
What is Zaghrouta?
Zaghrouta, an Arabic cheer, is a traditional way of expressing joy in many Arab cultures. It has been used since before Islam and is shared by people of different religions, including Christians.
The sound is a high-pitched cheer, often heard at weddings and happy events. It is an important part of celebrations but is not linked to any one religion and is not an Islamic practice.

During her performance, Carpenter had a brief moment of confusion when she noticed a fan making the 'Zaghrouta' cheer and mistook it for 'yodeling'.
“I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing?” she asked while seated at the piano during her 'We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night' performance. “I don’t like it,” she continued. While the fan responded by explaining that the sound was part of their “culture” and a “call of celebration,” a confused Carpenter replied, asking “It's your culture?” highlighting the misunderstanding in real time.
Aside from the moment, the set generated buzz for its high energy and surprise elements. Carpenter brought out special cameo appearances from Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell and Sam Elliot as well as a voice cameo from Samuel L Jackson, adding to the scale of the show. She performed a 21-song set and is set to return for a second weekend performance at the festival.
