Biden campaign slammed after releasing 'MAGA Mike' ad targeting Speaker Johnson and Trump on abortion
WASHINGTON, DC: In a strategic move aimed at underscoring the Republican stance on reproductive rights issues, President Biden’s reelection campaign unveiled a scathing video on Friday, April 12.
Entitled “MAGA Mike,” the video juxtaposes former President Trump with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La), spotlighting their shared views on matters such as Roe v Wade and abortion legislation.
Biden campaign attacks Trump & Johnson
The video, first disseminated via The Hill, compiles remarks from both Republicans concerning reproductive rights.
It commences with a clip of Trump proudly claiming responsibility for the termination of Roe v Wade, followed by Johnson’s assertion that the landmark ruling provided constitutional cover for what he termed as the "elective killing of unborn children in America."
Moreover, the footage features Trump hailing Johnson as "popular and smart," while Johnson contends that politicians must confront whether destroying embryos in vitro fertilization procedures constitutes murder.
In a particularly striking segment, the video includes posts from Johnson advocating for punitive measures against both abortion-performing doctors and women who undergo the procedure. "Trump and Johnson: same extreme MAGA agenda," the video asserts, encapsulating the essence of their shared viewpoints.
Biden's senior spokesperson for rapid response, Sarafina Chitika, minced no words in her response to the video's release.
“Women know they can’t trust Donald Trump on abortion — and this is why: after overturning Roe, saying women should be punished for having abortions and championing a national abortion ban during his first term, Trump is spending today campaigning alongside one of the most extreme anti-abortion, anti-IVF leaders in Congress,” she declared.
“Together, Donald Trump and Mike Johnson would ban abortion nationwide the minute they get the chance — but as President Biden has said, neither one of them has a clue about the power of women. They’ll find out this November,” Chitika added.
This strategic release comes on the heels of Trump’s recent statement, wherein he claimed he would refrain from signing a national abortion ban if reelected—a statement promptly dismissed by the Biden campaign as a lie, given Trump's consistent record on the issue.
In tandem with the video launch, the Biden campaign aired an advertisement in Arizona, a pivotal battleground state. This move followed the Arizona Supreme Court's decision to uphold a law dating back to 1864, which criminalizes performing abortions, The Hill reported.
Social media backlash
However, the abortion-centric ads faced a backlash on social media platforms.
"Abortion is number 6 in the list of concerns for Americans, it’s hilarious that the left is choosing this as their election hill to die on," one posted on X.
"So what," another fumed.
"Abortion isn't birthcontrol. It kills a human being. Don't lump it into reproductive rights!!!! That is immoral," someone else cautioned.
"The only people watching Biden’s campaign videos are low-info sheep," another chimed in.

Harris condemns Trump's policies
During a campaign stop in Arizona on Friday, Vice President Harris took the chance to mobilize support. She criticized the surge of abortion restrictions spreading across states following the overturning of Roe v Wade, squarely attributing the blame to Trump.
“Enough with the gaslighting. We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban,” she told a crowd in Tucson.
“He basically wants to take America back to the 1800s. But we are not going to let that happen. Because, here’s the deal, this is 2024 not the 1800s and we’re not going back. We are not going back,” Harris added.
In a scathing rebuke, Harris attributed the crisis to Trump’s policies and judicial appointments, highlighting his cavalier attitude towards women's rights.
“It has demonstrated once and for all that overturning Roe was just the opening act, just the opening act of a larger strategy to take women’s rights and freedoms. Part of a full-on attack, state-by-state, on reproductive freedom,” she said. “And we all must understand who is to blame—former President Donald Trump did not.”
