Tom Cruise's MI-style stunt at Olympics closing ceremony panned as 'predictably boring and so American'
PARIS, FRANCE: Tom Cruise's daring stunt at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics indeed added Hollywood glamor as the City of Love handed over the hosting duties to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. The 62-year-old actor's 'Mission Impossible' style performance turned out to be unsurprising as many expected him to do something similar to his movies.
Cruise descended from off the Stade de France roof, landing amidst the crowd before getting on the motorbike and riding out of the arena while carrying the Olympic flag.
In a pre-recorded video, the actor, who is known for doing all his own stunts, was seen blazing his way through Paris on a motorcycle, boarding a plane and parachuting onto the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles to mark the next Olympics on American soil. Billie Eilish and H.E.R. played 'Can't Stop' by LA's Red Hot Chili Peppers during Cruise's performance.

Tom Cruise's Olypmics surprise falls flat
Tom Cruise's appearance was predicted by some fans, as he had been seen several times in Paris recently, supporting the US swimming relay team and watching Olympic medalist Simone Biles compete.
In addition, the stunt was a promotion for Cruise's upcoming movie 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two' scheduled to be released in May 2025, marking his eighth time portraying Ethan Hunt.
Soon after his Olympic performance, Paramount Pictures, which made the film series, thanked Cruise for his contributions.
"Today's closing ceremonies brought our world another incredible moment from Tom Cruise, one that has us looking back on many before it. No matter the mission, he's always accepted it," the statement on X read.
"We want to take this opportunity to thank Tom for all that he has done for our industry and art forms as both an actor and a producer," it added. "He's consistently strived for the utmost competence across any and all skills that will better the story and experience for the audience."
Cruise responded to the post, writing on X, "I'm incredibly proud of all that we've done together. I look forward to sharing our next Mission!"

Fans bored by Tom Cruise's 'predictable' stunt
The internet deemed Tom Cruise's Olympics performance a repetition of his stunt from the spy film and called it predictable because Crusie is known for such surprises.
"The way the commentators couldn't stop making puns about Tom Cruise during the olympics ceremony Man did all of his favourite stunts, jumped off of a building, rode a motorcycle, ran a bit, climbed a bit, and of course jumped out of an airplane. A mission impossible supercut," a user wrote.
"Honestly this is the most batshit thing ever and yet still totally unsurprising. i can imagine tom cruise doing smth like this on just like a casual tuesday yk," another remarked.
"He will ride through Paris with the bike and the flag (we already know that ) ... then he will stand on top of the stadium roof, and from there he will be lowered down with the flag. No parachute. Luckily," added a third user.
"I’d seen so much of Tom Cruise during the Olympics my first reaction was “again what’s with the Tom Cruise is a camera person in love or something?” Then I realized the gimmick and said Oh…. It kinda fell flat," read a fourth response.

"How predictably boring and so American," someone else claimed.
"Typical French overkill, with a senseless theme along with electrickery," an individual opined.
"Tom Cruise's entrance to receive the Olympic flag from Simone Biles, to get on a motorcycle and then on a cargo plane to #LosAngeles2028 with By The Way by Red Hot Chili Peppers in the background. It is reminiscent of Mission Impossible," read one response.
"That mission wasn't impossible," another chimed in.
"Still cool...but I was kinda expecting like him parachuting out of like a giant plane lighting of fireworks," said one user.
