WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump stole the limelight at the FIFA 2026 World Cup draw by performing his signature “YMCA” dance at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, December 5.
Trump also received the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize given by the world soccer organization.
Trump steals the limelight with his signature moves
At the draw ceremony, co-hosted by Kevin Hart and Heidi Klum at the Kennedy Center, President Trump attracted significant attention when he stood up to dance during the final performance of the Village People's "YMCA," while first lady Melania Trump was seen to have greatly enjoyed his dance moves.
It is to be noted that this song is a regular feature, along with "Nessun dorma," at Trump's campaign rallies.
Trump was joined by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the event.
The ceremony also featured sports icons such as Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal, Wayne Gretzky, Eli Manning, and Aaron Judge.
Furthermore, President Trump was also awarded the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize by Gianni Infantino, the head of the international football association, “in recognition of his exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world.”
Infantino said, "Mr President, this is your prize. This is your peace prize. There is also a beautiful medal for you that you can wear everywhere you want to go." Trump immediately wore the award around his neck, saying, "I'm going to wear it right now."
FIFA 2026 to begin in June and end on 19 July
Following the World Cup group unveiling, which was watched by soccer fans worldwide, organizers are hopeful that this global enthusiasm will boost attendance for the tournament.
The competition, which will begin in June, will conclude on July 19th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
While Trump earlier in the week commented that ticket sales were “good,” there are remaining questions about the final staging of the event.
Leaders draw World Cup groups amid major expansion
President Trump, President Sheinbaum, and Prime Minister Carney actively participated in the draw by placing their respective countries into pre-determined World Cup groups before the remaining slots in the 12 four-team groups were filled.
The World Cup expansion from 32 to 48 teams has aided countries like North Macedonia and Curaçao, whose chances of qualification have improved under the new format, which has increased the number of groups from eight to 12.
As cited by AP, the larger field made the draw more complicated, as six of the 48 teams are still undecided and will be determined through playoff matches in March, necessitating the use of placeholders during the ceremony. One positive impact of the expanded field is the reduced likelihood of multiple top-calibre teams being gathered together.
