'9-1-1' star Oliver Stark breaks ankle during stunt sequence as 3 others are injured: Reports
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor Oliver Stark suffered a major injury on the set of the latest season of '9-1-1'. Along with the actor, three other stunt performers were reportedly injured while working on the procedural drama.
According to Deadline, the individuals suffered injuries “to varying degrees in recent months” while filming the hit ABC series for its 10th season. Although the incidents do not appear to be connected, the injuries highlight the challenges of performing stunts on a demanding television production schedule.
'9-1-1' star Oliver Stark reportedly breaks ankle during Season 10 stunts
According to the publication, Stark, who plays Evan “Buck” Buckley on the show, suffered an ankle fracture that required surgery in August. He has since returned to work while recovering from the injury, and production continued during his recovery.
According to Page Six, a source revealed that one stunt double sprained his ankle while performing the same stunt. However, he declined medical treatment at the time, so no injury report was submitted to the production team. The stunt equipment was adjusted after the incident, but Stark later rolled his ankle while performing the scene.
Deadline understands that four performers, including star Oliver Stark, have sustained stunt-related injuries to varying degrees in recent months. While the incidents do not seem to be connected, the unfortunate timing does highlight the challenges with making a stunt-heavy show like ‘9-1-1’ on a broadcast network schedule https://t.co/mifRcrS0ns

A few weeks later, another stunt worker injured their arm on a set piece that “had jagged metal on it,” Deadline reported. The worker had to visit a hospital to receive stitches for the wound.
In the past two weeks, another stunt performer was hospitalized after an “awkward landing” during a stunt designed to mimic a collapsing ground. The performer reportedly suffered a broken rib and minor lung compression.
'9-1-1' stunt safety guidelines emphasize preparation and equipment checks
The standards and practices are developed by Contract Services’ industry-wide safety committee. According to the company's latest stunt safety bulletin, the general guidelines for stunts emphasize the need to “allow enough time for rehearsals, training, equipment preparations, and inspections.”
Although the reported injuries have not been said to affect the series' production, working within a relatively tight schedule can pose challenges when it comes to performing stunts safely. Proper planning and adequate preparation are essential to reducing risks during complex stunt sequences.
A stunt coordinator is generally responsible for helping “ensure the safety of performers or others on the set” and “engages pro-actively with the appropriate personnel” regarding performer safety.
'9-1-1' previously faced a crew member's death
Two years ago, a crew member died of cardiac arrest while driving away from the set of the same series. At the time, a production source told Deadline that "9-1-1 was one of the safest that I’ve ever worked on.”
The recent reported injuries involve four performers, including Stark, and occurred during separate incidents in recent months. While the incidents do not appear to be connected, they highlight the physical risks associated with stunt work on a television series.
