Cher ends legal feud with son Elijah Blue Allman, withdraws conservatorship request filed last year
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: All's well that ends well. Cher has withdrawn her bid for conservatorship over her son, Elijah Blue Allman. With this, nearly a year-long legal battle has come to a peaceful resolution.
Cher, who turned 78 in May, had filed for the conservatorship in December 2023, citing concerns over Allman’s struggles with drug addiction and his ability to manage his finances. However, the mother and son have reportedly reached an agreement, putting an end to their bitter feud, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Cher ends feud with son Elijah Blue Allman
In a Zoom hearing held on Friday, September 13, at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Judge Jessica Uzcategui formally dismissed Cher’s petition for conservatorship.
"Congratulations to all of you," the judge told the lawyers representing both parties. Neither Cher nor Elijah, 48, appeared in person or via video for the hearing.
The legal battle began last December when Cher petitioned the court to gain control of her son’s finances. She argued that Allman’s past struggles with addiction, combined with mental and physical health issues, made him incapable of managing the $120,000 annual payout from a trust fund set up by his late father, rock legend Greg Allman.
Cher expressed fear that Elijah would use his quarterly $30,000 distributions to buy drugs, putting his life at risk.
However, Elijah vehemently opposed the conservatorship, calling his mother "misguided" and unfit to control his finances. In court documents, he stated, "The only person who can save me from my demons is me – and I'm doing just that." He also asserted that he had been handling his finances responsibly, paying bills, managing taxes, and even releasing new music with his band, Deadsy.
Though the judge initially denied Cher's request for the conservatorship, the case was left open to allow time for private mediation. The mother and son eventually participated in a session with a retired judge, and the court confirmed that they reached an agreement, although the details of that agreement were not disclosed.
In his statements, Elijah firmly rejected claims that he was mentally ill or at risk of falling back into addiction.
"I have struggled with addiction, but I am not mentally ill," he told the court, adding that he had demonstrated his ability to manage his life over the past months.
This legal victory comes after Allman’s well-documented struggles with substance abuse. Last year, he was reportedly seen passed out outside the Chateau Marmont hotel, which led him to return to rehab.
Internet reacts to Cher’s withdrawal of conservatorship bid over son Elijah Blue Allman
Following Cher’s decision to withdraw her petition for conservatorship over her son Elijah Blue Allman, social media has been buzzing with opinions on the high-profile family drama. While some are hopeful for Elijah’s recovery, others remain skeptical about his ability to stay on track.
One user expressed a somber outlook, writing, "Team No One. She's always been an absent mom and he's a 48-year-old addict. This hasn't ended and won't end well."
Another expressed concerns for Elijah’s future, commenting, "I do hope he is on the right road but am skeptical. He's followed in Greg's footsteps a long time. I hope he doesn't follow his father all the way to the end."
"Conservatorship? Wait, she was the one campaigning to get Brit Spears conservatorship ended!" one user pointed out.
Another remarked, "Sad situation. Truly believe Cher and Elijah love each other. But girlfriend has her own agenda. Hope he does well."
One individual noted, "Sometimes people have to reach total rock bottom before they will accept help... where there is a lot of money involved, it becomes a more clouded issue—protecting the child or the money."
"She was never equipped to be a mother," another said.
"Her childhood was a mess with her own mother marrying 7-8 times... And should have given more thought as to who she was having a child with—Allman was a notorious drug user, how did she think that was going to work out?" a person pointed out.
