BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ignited a storm of controversy over the weekend with his high praise for former President Donald Trump, whom he labeled a "man of peace," while predicting President Joe Biden's defeat in the upcoming November election.

Orban's comments, delivered during an interview stirred the internet and drew sharp criticism from various quarters.

During the interview, Orban expressed confidence that Biden's tenure would end soon. "I’m sure that a change would be good for the world," he said, emphasizing his belief that Trump’s return to office would positively impact global politics.

Orban praised Trump as a "self-made man" with a unique approach to international affairs, asserting that his leadership would benefit global stability. "He [Trump] is the man of peace. Under his four-year term he did not initiate a single war, and he did a lot in order to create peace in old conflicts in very complicated areas of the world," Orban said, according to Politico.

Orban, who has faced criticism for his close ties with Russia amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, contrasted Trump's peaceful record with the Biden administration's aggressive stance in the Russia-Ukraine war. The Hungarian leader's remarks come as Washington continues to provide significant financial and military support to Kyiv.

Orban's recent visit to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin further fueled the controversy surrounding his comments. This trip drew sharp rebukes from both Washington and European allies.

A senior Biden administration official, speaking ahead of the NATO summit in Washington, voiced concerns about Orban’s decision to visit Moscow, arguing that it neither advanced the cause of peace nor supported Ukrainian sovereignty.

"We’re concerned that Prime Minister Orban would choose to take this trip to Moscow, which will neither advance the cause of peace, nor will it promote Ukrainian sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence," the official stated.

Prior to his Moscow visit, Orban met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, advocating for a "deadline-bound cease-fire" to expedite peace negotiations. Zelensky praised Orbán’s visit as a "clear signal" of European unity and collective action.

However, Orban's insistence on involving major global players like the US, China and European nations in peace talks highlighted his criticism of Washington's role. "China has a peace plan. America runs a war policy," Orban told Politico, underscoring his view that the US approach hindered diplomatic efforts.

The meeting comes as Hungary's ruling party has indicated it's prepared to ratify Sweden's accession to NATO. After Turkey dropped its objection, Hungary remained the only NATO member to oppose Sweden's bid, which was launched in the wake of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
