WASHINGTON, DC: The Trump campaign has begun vetting potential vice presidential candidates for the former president, with several prominent figures making the shortlist, according to the New York Post.

A source close to the New York Post revealed on Wednesday, June 5, that Sens Tim Scott (R-SC), JD Vance (R-Ohio), and Marco Rubio (R-Fla) have recently submitted various levels of vetting paperwork to Trump's campaign

According to the source, Rep Byron Donalds (R-Fla), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson have also submitted vetting paperwork.

The source disclosed that the screening process had been planned for last month. The Associated Press originally reported that the paperwork process for potential running mates has begun.

According to a Trump campaign spokesperson, the 77-year-old former president is still deciding whom to add to his ticket and when to make the announcement for the upcoming November election.

Trump campaign spokesman Brian Hughes said in a statement, "Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless the person is named Donald J Trump."

In a May interview with News12, Trump stated that he will make his final choice for a running mate "probably not too much before" the Republican National Convention officially begins and he is declared the party's nominee.

Notably, vice presidential nominees are usually announced on the last night of the convention, which this year takes place from July 15–18.

"We have so many. I don’t want to do that, we have so many. We have many people who would do a fantastic job," Trump told the outlet when asked to identify his top three choices.

Internet trolls Trump as his camp sends vetting paperwork to possible 2024 VPs

Several internet users trolled Donald Trump as his campaign has started screening potential vice presidential candidates for the former president, and his short list includes several well-known figures.

A user wrote on X, "It’ll be none of these people. This is a diversion," while one added, "Not one of these can do a thing to help him get elected. They are all weak candidates. And only one woman..."

A person also stated, "If a felon can obtain the top job(President) in the US then ALL felons should be able to get any job in the government, military, be able to vote in all states, be allowed to get security clearances and have all rights restored. It is only fair!" whereas one mentioned, "The vetting: 'will you lie for trump?'"

A user also wrote, "I just smiled. This isn’t going to go well for him."
