WASHINGTON, DC: Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh criticized ex-president Donald Trump, saying he "appeals to the worst of us" in light of his recent rhetorics, reported The Hill.

Walsh, who served a single term in Congress representing Illinois from 2011 to 2013, also urged President Joe Biden to seize the opportunity.

"I mean Trump appeals to the worst of us, and [Biden]'s going to drive this home as best as he can," the former congressman said during an interview with MSNBC's 'The Weekend,' on Saturday, April 6.

Walsh's criticism came while reacting to certain statements Trump made recently during his campaign trail. Speaking at an Ohio rally in March, the four-time indicted ex-president warned of a "bloodbath" for the automobile industry in case he fails to win the November election.

Similarly, Trump drew backlash for claiming illegal immigrants were "poisoning the blood of our country" in another rally in December 2023.

Joe Walsh calls Donald Trump an 'evil demagogue'

Continuing his tirade against the GOP presumptive nominee, Walsh argued, "We're living in a populist moment. Trump is an evil demagogue who throws horrible stuff at us about this populist moment. The American people are angry."

The former lawmaker who briefly ran for the 2020 Republican presidential primary race against Trump urged the Democrats and Biden to take advantage of the moment with only seven months left for election day.

"I think Biden and that team need to recognize the moment and appeal to the best of us. This is not who we are. I get we're angry, and the Democrats need to recognize the anger, but not demagogue it like Trump is," Walsh said.

Irrespective of casting his vote for Trump in the 2016 election, Walsh turned critical of the White House hopeful during his 2020 re-election bid.

In a CNN interview in March, Walsh claimed that criticizing the former president adversely impacted his political career. While weighing in on the significance of Mike Pence's refusal to endorse Trump, the former GOP congressman revealed that he "took a blowtorch" to his career for publicly standing against Trump.
