Here's why Britney Spears has stopped million-dollar child support payments to ex Kevin Federline
OAHU, HAWAII: Pop icon Britney Spears marked a significant milestone on September 12 as her youngest son, Jayden, turned 18, marking the end of Spears’s child support payments to ex-husband Kevin Federline for Jayden and their other son, Sean Preston.
While it's a celebratory moment for Spears, sources close to her have exclusively revealed that her ex-husband Kevin Federline may not be feeling as festive.
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline met in the summer of 2004 and were married by September 2004. Spears filed for divorce in 2006.
Britney Spears paid 'extraordinary' $5M in child support
According to Daily Mail, Britney Spears has paid an estimated $5 million over 17 years in child support for her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James.
A source close to Spears told The Mail, “The amount of money Britney has given Kevin for the two boys was extraordinary, and it was enough for any man to support an entire family, which is what she believed he has done.”
At 46, Federline, who had once been a backup dancer for Justin Timberlake and had attempted a pop career without much success, occasionally takes on DJ gigs.
Spears's inner circle believes that Federline would find it challenging to maintain his accustomed lifestyle without child support payments. However, from Spears's perspective, “Britney viewed it as his problem to solve.”
As for Spears, she is reportedly thriving, enjoying her life, and financially secure.
She has seen a significant financial boost from the success of her best-selling memoir, 'The Woman in Me', along with a movie deal with Universal Pictures to adapt the book into a film.
This new venture has helped her move past her previous struggles and tap into a renewed sense of creativity.
“This film has allowed her to get outside of her head,” a source shared with The Mail, mentioning that Spears was even thinking about creating new music for the film’s soundtrack, although this was still in the early stages of planning.
Britney Spears looks forward to reuniting with her sons
Amidst this personal renaissance, Britney Spears is also working to rid her life of negative influences, including her former housekeeper-turned-boyfriend, Paul Soliz.
“She has rid herself of all toxic people,” a source said, emphasizing that Spears was eager for a fresh start. She was particularly excited about the prospect of “having her boys back” in her life.
Jayden’s 18th birthday will trigger the cessation of child support payments that Spears has been paying to Federline for the care of their children, Jayden and Sean Preston.
Despite her excitement, Spears wasn’t with Jayden on his birthday, as he was living in Hawaii and “would likely be having a celebration with his friends.”
Nevertheless, Spears plans to give him a gift that, according to sources, “was more expensive than anything his father could afford.”
Spears's relationship with Federline, however, remains complicated.
Court documents reveal Kevin Federline's child support payments
According to court documents, Kevin Federline had been receiving $240,000 annually in child support from Britney Spears since 2007, a figure that was increased to $480,000 per year by court order in 2017.
Federline and his family are now living on Oahu, Hawaii, in a rented five-bedroom mansion costing $14,000 per month.
He resides there with his third wife, Victoria Prince, whom he married in 2013, along with their blended family, including Jayden, Sean Preston, and four other children from Federline’s previous relationships.
This current lifestyle is a stark contrast to Federline's situation back in 2007 after his divorce from Spears, which was filed due to “irreconcilable differences.”
That same year, a California court awarded him custody of their sons as Spears struggled with drugs and alcohol and was subsequently placed under a conservatorship in 2008.
Initially, Spears was ordered to pay Federline $10,000 per month for each child, a sum that was later increased to $20,000 per month per child in 2018 after Federline cited financial challenges.
Federline had claimed in court documents that his income was limited to just $3,000 per month from DJing and that he lacked health insurance, stocks, assets, and savings.
In his statement, Federline explained, “I was simply less of a ‘name’ and less in demand than I was in 2008, which negatively affected my income.”
At that time, he and Prince were living in a small 2,000-square-foot home with their six children. He also pointed out, “Sean and Jayden have to share a room at my house. There was no room for them to invite friends over or to have sleepovers.”
Britney Spears's lavish life contrasts Kevin Federline's financial struggles
In stark contrast to Kevin Federline's circumstances, Britney Spears resided in a lavish 13,264-square-foot mansion equipped with luxurious features like a wine cellar, pool house, tennis court, and a golf course.
Federline, on the other hand, argued that he was unable to provide their sons with a comparable lifestyle and pointed to the significant gap between their living standards.
Following years of financial hardship and several career pursuits, such as modeling, music, and professional wrestling, Federline relocated his family to Hawaii in August 2023.
He cited new DJ opportunities and a job offer for his wife, Victoria Prince, as an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Hawaii as reasons for the move.
During this time, Spears focused on mending her relationship with her sons, especially after her conservatorship ended in November 2021, a period that had initially strained her bond with them.
In a 2022 interview with ITV, Jayden openly discussed his mother, implying that her activity on social media was a plea for attention.
“It’s almost like [Spears] had to post something on Instagram to get some attention. This has gone on for years and years and years, and there’s a high chance that this will never stop, but I’m hoping for me that she will stop.”
Britney Spears deletes post about child support
Britney Spears had previously shared a now-deleted post where she vented her frustrations, particularly about the child support payments.
She wrote, “Do you guys want me to continue to get better so I can continue giving your dad 40 grand a month? Or is the reason you guys have decided to be hateful is that it’s actually over in two years and you don’t get anything?”
Despite this, sources close to Spears later revealed that any tension between her and her sons was now resolved.
A source stated, “In terms of her boys Sean and Jayden, they knew that she would do the world for them, but she would be very careful to make sure any money she gave to them would not be handed over to their dad.”
With her personal and financial life flourishing, those close to Spears confirmed that she was in a great place. A source noted, “Britney was doing extremely well right now. She had plenty of money to live how she wanted for the remainder of her life.”
