Kamala Harris rolls out new steel policy quite similar to Donald Trump’s proposal yet again

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA: It seems Vice President Kamala Harris has swiped yet another policy proposal by former president Donald Trump — this time committing to keep US Steel under domestic ownership.

“US Steel is a historic American company, and it is vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies. US Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated," Harris declared at a campaign stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Monday, September 2.

The announcement aligns with President Biden’s stance, who said in March he was opposed to the sale of US Steel to Japan’s Nippon Steel.

“US Steel has been an iconic American steel company for more than a century, and it is vital for it to remain an American steel company that is domestically owned and operated," Biden said at the time.

However, the origins of this policy proposal are not unique to the Biden-Harris administration.

Donald Trump was the first to oppose deal

Former President Donald Trump had voiced his opposition to the US Steel deal even earlier than Biden, declaring in January that he would block any sale of the company to foreign interests if he were reelected.

“I would block it instantaneously. Absolutely. We saved the steel industry. Now, US Steel is being bought by Japan. So terrible," he said at the time.

It's worth noting that this policy issue had already been a part of Trump’s platform. Harris’ recent announcement has only led to further accusations of her campaign borrowing from Trump’s playbook.

Harris has been accused of adopting several of Trump’s policy proposals during her relatively brief time on the campaign trail. This includes her recent endorsements of policies such as “no taxes on tips” and the expansion of the child tax credit—both of which closely mirror ideas promoted by Trump and his allies.

No taxes on tips

One of the policies that Kamala Harris has blatantly adopted is the elimination of taxes on tips, a proposal that Donald Trump first introduced at a campaign rally in early June.

The former president quickly made this policy a cornerstone of his proposed agenda, noting how the idea came to him from a conversation with a “very smart waitress” in Nevada who was frustrated by the government taking a portion of her tips.

Harris announced her support for the same policy in August. “It is my promise to everyone here when I am president, we will continue our fighting for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers," she declared at a rally in Las Vegas.

Trump immediately accused Harris of copying his ideas.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY – It won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

Child tax credit

Kamala Harris has also proposed expanding the child tax credit, leading to more accusations of her campaign aping Donald Trump’s policies.

On August 16, Harris announced that she would expand the child tax credit to provide middle- and lower-income families with children in their first year of life a maximum of $6,000 in tax breaks. However, she did not specify the income thresholds that would define middle- and lower-income families.

Harris’ campaign also highlighted her commitment to restoring the expanded child tax credit from Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which provided up to $3,600 per child.

However, this proposal closely followed remarks made by Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, who had advocated for a universal child tax credit just days before Harris’ announcement.

“I’d love to see a child tax credit that’s $5,000 per child," Vance said on August 11. "President Trump has been on the record for a long time supporting a bigger child tax credit, and I think you want it to apply to all American families.”

Vance mocked Harris for imitating the Trump campaign’s ideas.

“Kamala’s advisers are considering adopting all of Donald Trump’s policies," he said during a campaign stop in Michigan. "I’ve heard that for her debate in a few weeks, she’s going to put on a navy suit, a long red tie, and adopt the slogan ‘Make America Great Again,’” Vance quipped, per the New York Post.

Kamala Harris trolled for aping Donald Trump's policy proposals

Many on social media slammed Kamala Harris after she swiped yet another policy proposal by Donald Trump.

"She’s such a phony," one posted on X.

"Every American at this point, knows she doesn’t have an original thought in her brain," a second user wrote.

"She can’t think for herself, she has to steal ideas from Trump’s campaign," another offered.

"Kamala is just like Joe Biden. Plagiarist," read a comment.

"This piece of garbage hasn’t got an original thought in her head besides abortions in taco trucks," someone else chimed in.

"Why doesn't she just vote for Trump? At least then, we'd know the policies would actually get implemented," another remarked.
