Trump asserts border bill unnecessary, claims it's being used to put 'disaster' on Republicans' shoulders
WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Donald Trump slammed the emerging Senate bipartisan border deal, claiming the legislation is unnecessary and that the Biden administration would put it "onto the shoulders of the Republicans," reported The Hill.
The Republican frontrunner, in a Truth Social post on Monday, January 29, added that the bill under President Joe Biden would make the situation "WORSE."
"A Border Bill is not necessary to stop the millions of people, many from jails and mental institutions located all over the World, that are POURING INTO OUR COUNTRY. It is an INVASION the likes of which no Country has ever had to endure. It is not sustainable or affordable, and will, under Crooked Joe Biden, ONLY GET WORSE," Trump wrote.
The ongoing crisis in the US southern border took center stage in the ongoing presidential race, and the former President actively lobbied to kill the deal by pressuring GOP Senators to prevent Biden's victory.
In addition to his opposition to the bill, Trump has consistently lashed out at Biden for turning the border into a "big gushing wound."
Donald Trump accuses Democrats of breaking the border
Claiming the US border was the most secure and safest when he was in the White House, Trump added the Democrats should fix the issue.
"I had the safest and most secure Border in US History," the ex-President continued.
"I didn't need a 'Bill!' They are using this horrific Senate Bill as a way of being able to put the BORDER DISASTER onto the shoulders of the Republicans. The Democrats BROKE THE BORDER, they should fix it. NO LEGISLATION IS NEEDED, IT'S ALREADY THERE!!!"
At a Nevada campaign rally on January 27, the leading Republican presidential candidate appeared to boast about his actions to thwart the bill, declaring his willingness to take the blame if the bill fails.
"I'll fight it all the way. A lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they're blaming it on me. I say, that's okay. Please blame it on me. Please," Trump said at the rally.
According to a report by CNN, an agreement has been reached on the bipartisan deal, which could go into the Senate in the coming days.
However, Sen. Chris Murphy, a key negotiator in the border deal, expressed his concern about Republicans killing the legislation.
"This bill could be ready to be on the floor of the United States Senate next week. But it won't be if Republicans decide that they want to keep this issue unsettled for political purposes," he said in CNN's 'State of the Union.'
The surging number of illegal immigrants entering the country through its southern border recently led to a standoff between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden administration.
