Meghan Markle ranks 17th on 'most popular royals' poll, trolls call her 'failure in her own country'
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Meghan Markle's popularity in the United Kingdom appears to be declining as she was ranked 17th in a recent poll of the "most popular royal family members".
The YouGov poll revealed that Princess Alexandra, who is rarely in the spotlight, is more popular than the Duchess of Sussex, Express reported.
Meghan, who was once one of the most talked-about royals in the UK after her relationship with Prince Harry went public, has seen her image shift in recent years.
Harry and Meghan became less popular when they left UK
Meghan Markle's popularity only increased after she got married to the Duke of Sussex in May 2018. However, things began to change after the married couple decided to leave their royal life behind and move to the US to be independent.
They now live in Montecito, California, with her two children — son Prince Archie, 5, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 3.
Their standing in Britain became worse after their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and Harry's tell-all memoir ‘Spare’ last year.
Queen Elizabeth II tops the popularity poll
As per the latest quarterly data by YouGov, the late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, ranked first in the poll as she received 98% of the fame votes and 77% of the popularity votes.
The Duchess of Sussex’s popularity was at 23% and her fame at 99%, which is one place below Princess Alexandra, who is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and was also her bridesmaid at her 1947 wedding.
The 87-year-old royal, who is the daughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, was ranked 16th with 56% fame vote and 25% popularity vote.
Meghan’s husband Prince Harry, 40, was also not very far from her as he got the 15th rank with 99% fame and 27% popularity.
Kate Middleton ranked in second place with an impressive 73% popularity vote and 96% fame vote, highlighting her strong presence among royal fans. The Princess of Wales was MIA from the public eye for some time after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle finds it ‘hard’ to trust her
The poll comes after Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle slammed the Duchess of Sussex by saying, “She’s done what she did to her own family to so many other people, too. I knew my dad had suffered, but I thought she would stop at the queen.”
She added, “If you accept an olive branch, you are asking to be hurt again. I think that would be weird,” the New York Post reported.
“It would be hard to trust that she was doing it for the right reasons,” Samantha asserted.
Internet call Meghan Markle ‘inauthentic’
Meanwhile, many people reacted to the poll results on social media. Some took to the comments section of the Newsweek report to express their views on the same.
“Her Royal Highness, Catherine, The Princess of Wales has TOPPED Dictator Memegain in every single AMERICAN poll. Always. Explain that, The Token!! Dictator Memegain is a failure in her own country!” one reader commented.
Another reader wrote, “She will NEVER regain her popularity despite her many rebrands. People have seen her for what she is - a lying grifter with no work ethic.”
“She and Harry have become despicable people. No one wants to be anywhere near them. The royal family has washed their hands of them,” one person said.
Another remarked, "Meghan Markle is completely inauthentic. Nothing she does will change that fact.”
One individual noted, “So Princess Catherine is second only to the Late Queen. And Meghan is second from the bottom. And it's not just in the UK.”
Another added, “Honestly I'm not surprised by the results that Jack reported on. YouGov and IPSO-Mori polling over the last 4 1/2 years has shown a steady decline for Harry, Meghan and of course Andrew who is at the bottom. Even the late QEII's Gloucester and Kent cousins are more popular even though fewer members of the public know who they are. The Kent siblings Edward and Alexandra are in their late eighties now. Princess Alexandra has more or less retired too.”
