WASHINGTON, DC: Melania Trump is set to walk away with a significant financial windfall as part of her deal with Amazon to license a documentary film about her life.

According to a report, the first lady will receive a substantial portion of the $40 million deal, amounting to at least $28 million.

Melania Trump secures high-profile sponsorships for her documentary

The deal, which will see over 70% of the proceeds go to Melania Trump, has drawn attention for its eye-popping figures and the lengths the first lady has gone to secure sponsorships for the film.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Melania has been actively pursuing sponsorship deals for the documentary, targeting blue-chip CEOs.

In a move that combines business acumen with the glamor of a high-profile film project, the first lady reportedly told CEOs who attended her husband’s inauguration on January 20 that they would need to contribute at least $10 million to be acknowledged in the film’s credits.

As an added incentive, those who agree to sponsor the documentary would receive an exclusive invite to its premiere.

The deal came together shortly after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos visited Mar-a-Lago in December, where he dined with President Donald Trump, just weeks after his victory in the November 5 election.

Melania had been keen on persuading Bezos, who had a fraught relationship with the president, to purchase the rights to the documentary. According to the Journal, the first lady’s efforts included enlisting Hollywood director Brett Ratner to help pitch the project.

Ratner, who is known for his work on films like the 'Rush Hour' series and 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' had kept a lower profile following accusations of misconduct during the #MeToo era.

At the Mar-a-Lago dinner, which included Bezos and his fiancee Lauren Sanchez, Melania reportedly “regaled” her guests with details about the upcoming documentary, effectively securing Amazon’s involvement.

Just two weeks later, Amazon made the announcement that it would stream the film on its Prime Video platform.

The deal marks a significant financial win for the Trump family, with Amazon paying a reported $40 million—three times more than the next highest competing bid.

The Journal revealed that Paramount, the parent company of CBS, made a “lowball” offer of $4 million, while Disney put forward a more substantial bid of $14 million. Other major streaming platforms, including Netflix and Apple, declined to make offers.

“We licensed the upcoming Melania Trump documentary film and series for one reason and one reason only — because we think customers are going to love it,” an Amazon spokesperson told the Journal, highlighting the company’s optimism about the project’s potential appeal.

This documentary deal is part of a broader financial boost for the Trump family, which has seen a significant amount of business directed its way since Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

In total, approximately $80 million has been funneled into Trump-affiliated businesses and the Trump presidential library, including settlements from lawsuits previously filed by the president against corporations.

Meta, for instance, settled a lawsuit with Trump for $25 million, while ABC News paid $15 million to resolve a defamation suit. Elon Musk’s X also agreed to a $10 million settlement.

Additionally, Paramount is reportedly in negotiations with the president’s legal team over a lawsuit concerning an allegedly deceptive edit of a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris.
