WASHINGTON, DC: In a controversial remark, director and producer Michael Moore described the US as “bad guys” in the Iran war and hailed the Middle Eastern country as one of the “greatest civilizations” this planet has ever had.

Moore’s statement came after President Donald Trump announced that a “whole civilization will die” if Iran fails to make a ceasefire deal to open the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which has extended beyond initial expectations.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy chokepoint with 20 percent of the world's oil supply and significant LNG passing through it, has triggered a surge in oil and gas prices amid growing concerns over supply disruptions.

Michael Moore calls the US ‘bad guys’

Moore lashed out at the Trump administration for its role in the Iran conflict on his Substack published on Wednesday, April 8. Calling out the alleged illicit roles of current and former American administrations in Iran, Moore accused the US of “meddling” in Iran’s internal matters since 1953.

“Our leaders and our media are stupid enough to keep asking questions like ‘why do they hate us?’ Hate us?! They don’t hate US! WE HATE THEM!” Moore further wrote.

“We’re the bad guys! If you didn’t realize that under previous presidents, at least Donald Trump has ripped off the mask and shown you who we really are!” he added.

Moore’s substack post came the day before the ceasefire announcement

Moore’s criticism of the US role in Iran came before Trump announced the two-week-long temporary ceasefire with Iran in exchange for the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Oscar-winning film personality also launched a scathing attack on Democrats for supporting the war.

Further intensifying his outburst, Moore called for Trump’s impeachment and urged the military leadership not to follow “illegal and immoral orders.”

While he criticized the US for being “sick and violent enough” to be the only country to use nuclear power, Moore hailed Iran as “one of the greatest civilizations.”

"Iran is the cradle of one of the greatest civilizations this planet has ever seen," he wrote.

Moore hails Iran as a ‘multicultural empire’

Further praising the Middle Eastern nation, Moore said, “While our ancestors in Europe were still figuring out how to build a hut, the Persians had already written the world’s first declaration of human rights, built a multicultural empire that treated conquered peoples with dignity, and were doing math and medicine that we wouldn’t catch up to for a thousand years.”

He then added, “These are the people who gave us algebra, medicine, and the theme song to Game of Thrones. Despite harsh government crackdowns and censorship today, Iran still produces some of the world’s greatest filmmakers. America has been meddling with and attacking Iran since 1953.”

Further asking people to stand up against the current administration, Moore said, “No one is coming to save us. We must do it ourselves.”

Trump announced ceasefire hours before Tuesday deadline

The two-week ceasefire was announced less than two hours before Trump’s Tuesday 8 PM deadline, when he had warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if no deal was reached.

“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote, adding that the deal was subject to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”

“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” the President mentioned.
