WASHINGTON, DC: In a surprising show of bipartisan support, over 200 former Republican aides who once worked for notable figures such as George W Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney have publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election, as per The Hill.

This endorsement, made through an open letter, signals a significant shift in the political landscape as some of the most respected members of the Republican establishment express their opposition to former president Donald Trump's potential return to the White House.

Over 200 former Republican aides sign letter in support of Kamala Harris for 2024 election

The letter, which was exclusively obtained by USA TODAY, features signatures from 238 former staffers who served under George W Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney, as well as a few who worked for George HW Bush.

These figures, who have long been pillars of the Republican Party, have united in their decision to support a Democratic candidate, emphasizing the urgency of the current political climate.

This endorsement follows a similar move in 2020 when around 150 anti-Trump Republicans rallied behind Joe Biden, contributing to his victory in that election.

"We reunite today, joined by new George HW Bush alumni, to reinforce our 2020 statements and, for the first time, jointly declare that we’re voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November," the letter reads.

"Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable," it adds.

Notable figures among the signatories include Mark Salter and Chris Koch, who served as chiefs of staff for McCain, Joe Donoghue, McCain's former legislative director, Jennifer Lux, press secretary for McCain's 2008 campaign, and Jean Becker, longtime chief of staff for HW Bush.

From Romney’s camp, David Nierenberg, who was the finance chair for his 2012 campaign, has also expressed support for Harris, along with David Garman, who served as undersecretary of Energy during W Bush’s administration, and Olivia Troye, a former advisor to both Bush and Vice President Mike Pence.

The letter highlights a deep concern for the future of the United States under Trump’s leadership, both domestically and internationally.

"At home, another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic leadership, this time focused on advancing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions," the letter states, referencing the Heritage Foundation's policy blueprint, which the Trump campaign has sought to distance itself from.

"Abroad, democratic movements will be irreparably jeopardized as Trump and his acolyte JD Vance kowtow to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies. We can’t let that happen," it continues.

The group’s letter also cites 2020 exit polling and voter data, suggesting that "moderate Republicans and conservative independents in key swing states" played a crucial role in Biden's victory.

These voters, the letter argues, "put country far before party," and the signatories are calling on more Republicans and independents to take a similar stand in the upcoming election by supporting Harris over Trump.
