Raskin sets deadline for Trump's 'mental capacity' test over Iran threats, demands results go public
WASHINGTON, DC: Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md) on Friday, April 10, formally requested that the White House physician conduct a “comprehensive cognitive assessment” of President Donald J Trump, citing concerns over recent statements related to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
In a letter addressed to Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, Raskin asked that the evaluation be completed by April 25 and that the findings be made public.
Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, pointed to the president’s recent public remarks and social media posts, including warnings directed at Iran, as the basis for his request.

He wrote that the situation raises questions about the president’s ability to carry out the responsibilities of the office during a period of heightened military tension.
The White House has not indicated any plans to authorize or release the results of such an assessment.
Jamie Raskin questions president's capacity amid Iran tensions
Raskin’s request follows a series of statements by President Trump regarding US policy toward Iran, including references to potential military escalation and consequences if US demands are not met.
In his letter, Raskin cited these remarks as part of a broader pattern that he said warrants further evaluation.
“The American people must be able to trust that the Commander-in-Chief has the mental capacity to discharge the essential duties of his office,” Raskin wrote.
He also referenced the context of the ongoing conflict, which began in late February, noting that the president’s communications have drawn attention across political and policy circles.
The administration has maintained that the president’s statements are part of a strategic approach to negotiations and deterrence.
White House rejects Jamie Raskin's request as politically motivated
The White House rejected the request, with spokesperson Davis Ingle describing it as politically motivated. In a statement, Ingle defended the president’s performance and said the administration does not view additional evaluation as necessary.
“President Trump’s sharpness stands in stark contrast to what we saw during the past four years,” Ingle said, adding that the president remains fully capable of carrying out his duties.
Raskin urges consistent standards on presidential cognitive fitness
In his letter, Raskin also referenced prior statements by Republican lawmakers regarding presidential fitness, urging them to apply consistent standards.
He cited past remarks from Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on the importance of cognitive readiness for office.
Raskin called for bipartisan consideration of the issue, stating that oversight of presidential fitness should remain a matter of institutional responsibility rather than partisan debate.
No Republican leadership has publicly endorsed the request for a cognitive assessment.
Impeachment and 25th Amendment talks escalate
The request comes as some Democratic lawmakers continue to discuss broader constitutional mechanisms, including impeachment proceedings or the 25th Amendment, in response to the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict.
No formal steps toward either process have been initiated in Congress. Any such action would require significant support beyond the current Democratic membership.
The White House has continued to characterize the president’s approach as part of ongoing negotiations, while lawmakers on Capitol Hill remain divided over the appropriate response.
