Taylor Swift fans think she will star in ‘The Bodyguard’ remake, trolls say 'cast Kanye in stalker role'

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The question that fans are asking after a flurry of hints suggested the Taylor Swift might be starring in a remake of 'The Bodyguard', the 1992 romantic thriller that made Whitney Houston a bona fide movie star.

However, while Swifties are excited, trolls joke that Kanye West should be cast as the stalker in a twist of drama.

The original 'The Bodyguard' and its legacy

Released in 1992, 'The Bodyguard' was a smash hit, starring Kevin Costner as Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, hired to protect Rachel Marron (played by Whitney Houston), a famous singer and actress, from a mysterious stalker.

The film's massive success included Academy Award nominations and the timeless classic 'I Will Always Love You', which became a global sensation and earned the late singer a Grammy Award.

With the original 'The Bodyguard' still fresh in fans' minds, news of a remake has stoked speculation.

Now, a new director and fresh talent are reportedly in the works for this remake, with all eyes on one particular star, that is, Swift.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros has tapped Sam Wrench, director of the pop star's 2023 concert film 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour', to direct the remake of 'The Bodyguard'. 

'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' became the highest-grossing concert movie ever, earning $261.7 million globally. His connection to Swift fuels the belief that she may be involved in the project.

Fans speculate Taylor Swift as Rachel Marron following Tyra Banks' remarks

The connection between Taylor Swift and the remake becomes even more intriguing as fans point out several clues that suggest she may be cast as Rachel Marron, originally portrayed by Whitney Houston.

The speculation picked up steam after model Tyra Banks, during an appearance on 'Today with Jenna & Friends', suggested that Swift could take the lead role in the remake alongside Idris Elba.

Banks, 51, shared her excitement, expressing, "I'm so beyond excited. That movie is everything."

She continued, weighing in on the potential casting, saying "I think Taylor Swift, 'cause business and commerce, art, she would freakin' sell like crazy."

Banks then proposed a unique dynamic, noting "But, okay, I'm just gonna be real, I'm a Black girl, it was Whitney Houston as a Black girl, Kevin Costner as a White man. What if we flipped it and it was Taylor Swift and Idris Elba? Hot!"

Taylor Swift's admiration for Whitney Houston

Taylor Swift’s deep admiration for Whitney Houston has long been known.

In a 2012 interview with E! News during the Universal CityWalk premiere of her new movie, 'Dr Seuss' The Lorax', she shared her admiration for the late singer.

"I was a huge fan of Whitney... and I was also a fan of her spirit. She was always smiling, and I just always felt like she was relatable."

Both artists share monumental success in the music world, with Houston’s 200 million records sold and Swift’s status as one of the best-selling artists of the 21st century.

A chance for redemption after 'Cats' flop

Taylor Swift’s last film role, in the 2019 adaptation of 'Cats', was not met with favorable reviews.

Despite its high-profile cast and a substantial budget, the film was panned by critics for its CGI effects and underwhelming performances, with Swift’s role as Bombalurina being especially criticized.

The movie made only $74.6 million globally, marking a loss of around $113 million.

After the 'Cats' flop, Swift might be eager to redeem herself and prove her acting chops once more, perhaps in a role as iconic as Rachel Marron, the Daily Mail reported.

Idris Elba as the perfect partner

If the remake does feature Taylor Swift as Rachel Marron, she might find a perfect on-screen partner in Idris Elba.

The two stars previously worked together in 'Cats', where Elba played Macavity, and he had high praise for Swift’s performance.

"Taylor was great. Her and I had a lot of work to do together, and she was amazing. She worked hard and was just happy to be there," he said. 

Their previous collaboration shows they have good on-screen chemistry, making them a natural choice for the central romantic leads in the new adaptation of 'The Bodyguard'.

The clue also lies in Kevin Costner

It seems that Taylor Swift may even have the backing of the original 'The Bodyguard' star, Kevin Costner.

In 2023, Costner attended Swift’s Eras Tour and declared himself an official Swiftie.

After seeing one of her concerts in Los Angeles, Costner took to Instagram, saying, "I had an amazing time with my daughter at the @taylorswift show. I was absolutely blown away watching her art bring so many people together." 

"I had a great view of her band and had a blast watching them, too. An inspiring night. I’m officially a Swiftie!" he added.

While Taylor Swift's fans are excited about the possibility of her starring in a remake of 'The Bodyguard', critics were quick to shut down the idea, comparing her vocal talents to those of the legendary Whitney Houston. Some even joked about casting Kanye West in the role of the stalker. 

One expressed, "Whitney Houston had a fantastic talented voice - the same can’t be said about Taylor Swift," and another said, "I do hope not. This was an iconic film and Whitney Houston was amazing. Taylor Swift is not the same kind of singer and it would be a very poor remake."

A person joked, "Have they cast Kanye West in the Kevin Costner role?" while someone else added, "She's not even close to being in Whitney's league. Good grief."

"They have to cast Kanye in the stalker role! He was born for this!" another comment read. 

"FFS. Why does EVERYTHING have to be remade? Whitney was iconic in this role and plain oatmeal Swift cannot compare. It’ll be utter tosh for sure," another person wrote, while one more commented, "I’m surprised they want to race swap the main character. Or are they pushing an agenda to deflect from recent controversies regarding race swapping?"
