NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and Sunny Hostin discussed what Donald Trump was looking for in his vice presidential candidate on the Wednesday, June 26, 2024, episode of 'The View'.

The subject was broached in light of Fox News coming to the aid of the presumptive GOP nominee, allowing top VP contenders to make their case on the network. The first to sit down with network host Lawrence Jones was JD Vance, with others such as Tim Scott and Doug Burgum slated to appear in the coming days.

Alyssa Farah Griffin's take on Donald Trump's probable VP selection process

"It's just like the apprentice," Griffin said at the Hot Topics table, drawing a comparison of the Fox program with the reality television show produced and hosted by the former president.

"It's basically a reality TV show but for the veepstakes... He (Trump) is looking for unabashed loyalty and for someone who won't outshine him. But I have a hard time understanding why would anyone want this job," she continued.

Recalling her time working for former VP Mike Pence during the Trump administration, Griffin shared that a trip that she then took with Pence to Southeast Asia resulted in the news headline, "As Trump alienates allies at home and abroad, Pence's Asia trip highlights his competent diplomatic skills."

"And Donald Trump was furious," she added. "That's not even a glowing headline... He does not want anyone to even slightly outshine him."

"So my guess is this: I think Doug Burgam is actually the smart money, he's basically Mike Pence with a higher net worth. He's steady, he's a governor... Somebody like JD Vance though, I think he'd (trump) be worried that he has aspirations himself and down the road might want to outshine him. Don Jr likes him, the Silicon Valley types like him, but he's very worried of someone who has their own aspirations," she added.

Sara Haines claims Donald Trump is 'looking for ratings'

"(Trump) is looking for who rates," stated Haines in reference to Fox helping Trump choose his running mate. "So what he's going to do is he's going to roll them out in interviews, and he's not looking for skills, he's not looking for even maybe a policy stance."

"He's looking for who do people... like where does the largest crowd come - who do most people watch, Because that's honestly what he needs. But I think it's most weirdly, you're hired and not you're fired," she jibed, referring to 'The Apprentice'.

"He's waiting it out. He also wants to, I think, continue to have these people working for him as devoted surrogates. So don't name your person, don't pick them. Just keep them all teased a little," added Haines.
