Trump's niece Mary admits she was ‘way too engaged’ slamming him last year in seemingly softening stance
PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: In a candid New Year’s Day Q&A on X (formerly Twitter), Mary Trump, psychologist and estranged niece of President-elect Donald Trump, advised her anti-Trump audience to adopt a calmer approach as her uncle prepares to re-enter the Oval Office.
Known for her scathing critiques of her uncle in books like the 2020 bestseller 'Too Much and Never Enough', Mary shared her reflections on managing the chaos surrounding his presidency, Daily Mail reported.
Mary Trump reflects on emotional strain of the past
Mary Trump admitted that the past year had left her emotionally drained and "way too engaged", and reportedly needed to chalk out a better way to "mitigate the potential horrors."
"I took so much of what happened this year to heart, and it had an impact on me — that was not a good one," she said.

She encouraged fellow critics not to spiral into despair, emphasizing the importance of staying informed without becoming consumed.
"I think we need to be more objective about what's going on," she mused. "Otherwise, it’s brutal when everything feels like a blow. I don’t have to know everything all the time."
Her advice to those feeling overwhelmed? "Don’t make all of this your life."
Mary Trump criticizes uncle Donald Trump's 'spectacular failing up'
Reflecting on the cyclical nature of Donald Trump’s controversies, Mary Trump pointed to how his incendiary posts or actions often triggered overreactions from critics.
"Donald would post something absolutely insane, and people would respond with, 'Finally, he's losing his mind, and it’s over because he’s crazy'. And you know, that happened for eight years," she said.
While she acknowledged that Trump’s behavior can be legitimately concerning, she urged critics to take a breath.
"We would overreact and think it’s the end of the world. So let’s take a breath," she advised.
Mary didn’t hold back in her criticism of her uncle, calling him out for "failing up so spectacularly" and mocking him for being "unemployed for the last four years".
She joked that he spent his post-White House years "doing nothing unless you count running for office as a job."
Predicting his behavior in office, she claimed Trump would spend most of his second term at Mar-a-Lago, "raiding the treasury" by charging government officials and staff to stay at his property.
"He’ll make obscene amounts of money off the backs of the American people," she alleged, referencing current Mar-a-Lago guest Elon Musk as an example of Trump’s transactional relationships.
"The last person who has Donald's ear is the most influential person," she noted of Musk, speculating that his stay at the property was part of a strategy to maintain influence.
Mary Trump criticizes Donald Trump's cabinet picks and immigration plans
When asked who Donald Trump might fire first from his Cabinet, Mary speculated Marco Rubio, but then reconsidered, calling him "pliant" and likening him to Senator Lindsey Graham.
"There’s gotta be some dirt on him, there’s just gotta be," she quipped.
On Trump’s immigration agenda, she criticized Tom Homan, Trump’s pick for "border czar," calling him a "vicious, vicious thug" and questioning the "depths of depravity" of Trump’s anti-immigrant supporters.
Mary took aim at Trump’s revival of ideas like buying Greenland or reclaiming the Panama Canal, suggesting these moves are meant to "normalize the concept for the idiots who follow him" and "soften the ground for Russian expansionism in western Europe".
"Not that he knows he’s doing that," she clarified, "but that’s what I think is happening."
In a pointed moment, Mary criticized Trump’s intention to attend President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, urging the Carter family to uninvite him.
"I sincerely hope that they tell him not to come," she said. "Tell him he’s a disgrace; we don’t want him there."
