WASHINGTON, DC: A video shows former President Barack Obama and current President Joe Biden having what looks like a pretty intense conversation at Ethel Kennedy's funeral.

The clip, which has now gone viral, captures a rather animated exchange between the two leaders.

Of course, social media sleuths went into overdrive — breaking down every second of the footage, analyzing body language, and making all kinds of wild guesses about what might’ve been said between them.

Tension peaks as Barack Obama and Joe Biden engage in tense exchange

It all went down during the funeral service for Ethel Kennedy — the 96-year-old matriarch of the Kennedy clan — held at St Matthew the Apostle Catholic Cathedral in Washington, DC.

The event brought together a bunch of high-profile names, including former President Bill Clinton, but it was Obama and Biden's seemingly heated exchange that really caught everyone's eye.

In the clip, Obama’s dramatic expressions take center stage as he seemingly says "no" and "not good," shaking his head. Meanwhile, Biden attempts to make his point while turning towards Obama during their conversation.

At one moment, Obama even crosses his arms and looks like he’s about to walk away before Biden reaches out, touching his arm to keep the conversation going.

You can almost sense the tension just from watching, even though the church organ drowns out their words in the background.

And it takes an interesting turn—just as the conversation between Obama and Biden intensifies, Clinton glances their way and gestures toward the front of the cathedral, as if urging them to concentrate on the ceremony.

Critics speculate on tense exchange between Barack Obama and Joe Biden

Critics on social media had a field day joking and speculating about the exchange.

"I’m surprised they didn’t have this convo behind closed doors. Maybe Obama just doesn’t give a s**t anymore now that Biden isn’t their nominee," one posted on X.

Another user imagined a hilarious scene playing out between the two: “Obama: 'That Orange Guy is going to cook her, isn't he?' Joe: 'Yeah, we know. Why did you guys commit a coup against me then?' Obama: 'You fall asleep every chance you get. It's embarrassing us'. Joe: 'COME ONN, MANNNN.'” [sic]

And of course, someone had to bring up ice cream: “Obama: ‘Listen Joe, we know you're sabotaging Kamala's campaign'. Biden: ‘Ah c'mon man, guess what, and by the way'. Obama: ‘Joe, we're revoking your ice cream privileges until you get your act together.’” Because what’s a Biden joke without an ice cream reference?

Some amateur body language experts got in on the action too.

“In the beginning when Barry starts talking to Biden, you can tell he said something that surprised him. From Biden's expression and the way he looks right at Barry. I think he said something along the lines of ‘we’re done,’” speculated one commenter.

Someone else insisted, “Obama is in charge!!! What former President upon leaving office buys a house 3 miles from the WH? They all said, 'Trump won't leave the WH' Well, well, Obama [is] a [stone's throw] away. Makes you wonder!”

“What I want to know is why does Biden look more coherent there than I've seen him in the last 4 years? He looks like he is comprehending what his puppet master is saying and responding. What's up with that?” another wondered.

This brief encounter at the funeral marked the first time Obama and Biden had seen each other since Biden exited the presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris.

Recently, Obama has been in the spotlight for criticizing Black male voters who haven't supported Harris, accusing them of sexism. Given this context, it's no wonder some believe that tension may have seeped into their conversation at the funeral.

A tribute to Ethel Kennedy's resilience and legacy

Amid the commotion, the true purpose of the gathering has been overshadowed—Ethel Kennedy’s funeral.

Ethel — the widow of Robert Kennedy (who was tragically assassinated while running for president in 1968) — raised 11 kids and faced countless family tragedies, from the deaths of her children to multiple other losses. She’s been through it all and she stayed strong through decades of public life.

Biden, who’s faced his own share of grief with the loss of his son Beau, took a moment during the service to share how much Ethel meant to him.

“Ethel was a hero in her own right,” he said, adding that her late husband Robert Kennedy was one of his personal heroes.

Obama chimed in too, calling Ethel “a spitfire” who “never seemed to take herself too seriously” even as she fought for what she believed in, the Daily Mail reported.
